two people who work in retail and wear name tags who i have encountered recently. both males.

dontay - this is the phonetic spelling of dante, i assume, its horrid to me and just sounds like someone heard the name and just assumed this was how it was spelled. plus, my friends dog is named dante, so thats my association.

chassity - its an atrocious, made up name and on a teenaged male. i pitied that guy from the second i figured out what his name tag said.

ok, now a couple of names i would like to get your thoughts on.

i am really big on nicknames. i nickname everyone. my boyfriends name is jack (his name is john, but he is a junior and his father goes by john, he has been called jack his whole life) and i call him jackie all the time. my ex was scott and i never called him anything but scotty. i dont know what it is. i just do that. so, when i am considering names, i need something that has a great nickname to go along with it.

violet - whats a good nickname besides just vi? because thats boring.

cosette - fell in love with it the past couple of days. cosie as a nickname. i love it. what do you guys think?

lastly, i have slowly fallen in love with the name lily over the past couple of months. is it too popular? what do you guys think? how many lilys are out there being born right now? would she be doomed to be lily s. for all of her school years? i adore it, and the way it sounds with the middle and last, so i happen to think its kind of perfect.

i have some popular names on my list, isabel and oliver being the most notable. i am not happy about the popularity spike since these have been high on my list for many many years, but i have resigned myself to knowing my kids will probably have somewhat common names. it sucks, but im not going to name them something different just for the sake of it. what do you guys think?

chassity sounds like chastity to me, which is a legit word/name, so maybe his parents were dumb?

my kids will also probably have popular names. idc, really. i'd change it if it's going to be in the top ten or if i know a lot of other kids with the name though, because as an ashley, i know first hand that it's annoying.

i agree with you on that. lily isnt in the top ten. i dont know where it is actually, i assume its fairly high, but i know it isnt in the top ten. i think its ok, its not like i am naming her ava (which is number one i believe) or emily/emma.

chassity = chastity, yes i agree and was the first thing i thought of too. i can only assume its another case of stupidity. and i could almost excuse it if the poor kid was a girl.

the only other nickname i can think of for violet is lettie.

lily is popular to the point of being boring to me now. as is isabel. and oliver, even though i still love that one. sadness.

lily - i think it's cute, especially on a little girl. :] if i really liked it, i honestly wouldn't care how popular the name is right now.

I love the name Dante, but you really can't spell it like that.

I love Violet, but I'm not crazy about Cosette, and Lily is one of the few flower names that I really don't like. I don't know anyone personally with the name, but it just seems like you're hearing it far too often these days.

my man is obsessed with it too, and we watched some of it this weekend, which is when i fell in love with the name. i never saw cosette in the piece i saw though, what is she like as a character, i am curious? all i know is that she is fantines (if i am remembering her name right) daughter.

does cosette become a strong character? or a prostitute? or what?

Cosette is an ingenue. She's very innocent and sheltered from the world by Valjean. She falls in love with Marius and married him at the end. I love her, but she's not that popular with Les Mis fans.

Ditto, I was thinking you had picked it because of Les Mis. I love it! Valjean adores Cosette and dotes on her. When they return to Paris, she falls in love with Marius (also an excellent name!) a fighter in the revolution. After Marius is saved by Valjean he marries Cosette, but takes her away from Valjean because he finds out he is an ex-con, but eventually she says goodbye to him on his deathbed. I tend to think of her as a strong-ish character. I think her strength is implied by her revolutionary choice of lover. (I'm wayyyy to obsessed with Les Mis. :)

I like Lily, and it seems to be pretty popular in really young kids now. I'm not sure if it is too popular to use, but in my city (in western mass) she would definitely not be the only Lily in her class. It seems all the names I loved are suddenly popular too--I keep hoping that will change! :(

My daughter is Lillian (but we call her Lily). We named her after my huband's grandmother and we were psyched at the time it was old fashioned and not that common. Ever since she was born in 06 it is EVERYWHERE! Don't do it!!! Of course I still love her name but I hate I hear it anywhere and everywhere :(

Violet - I think of V and Lettie for nicknames.

I love the name Lily. I know it's really popular right now, but that doesn't bother me too much right now. I won't be expecting kids for a few years yet. Although, I would give my little girl a different name that can use Lily as a nickname.

I love love LOVE Les Mis, but I think I'd have a hard time disassociating myself from thinking of it when it comes to using the name Cosette. As for Cosie as a nn, well, I know people call them different things, but I grew up calling them "beer cosies" as in the little sleeves used to keep your beer cool. And that's what I think of. haha

I like Oliver, too, despite how popular it's become.
