I've always LOVED the name Alexandria for a wee girl. I actually took care of a wee girl who was named Alexandria in the daycare center I used to volunteer at. She was a sweetheart and smart as anything. Her nickname was Lexi. I've always liked that nickname as well. If I did name one of my wee girls Alexandria, I'd use Lexi as a nickname and Faith as a middle name. What does everyone think?

I like it a lot, but I wouldn't use it, since there's an area nearish here called Alexandria. If we lived somewhere else, it would definitely be on the list.

I like Lexi as a nickname for it.

As I already said in my other comment, I want to pronounce Alexandria as Alex-an-dree-ah. Is that how it's supposed to be, or is it supposed to be pronounced like Alexandra?
I like it, though.

why would it be pronounced like Alexandra?

Because I've seen it pronounced Alexandra before (yeah, I don't get it either) and because in her other comment, she said the names she mentioned were 'unique spellings of common names'. To me Alexandria is not a different spelling, but a complete other name than Alexandra.

I'm really not trying to be annoying or anything, I was just wondering whether it was supposed to be pronounced like Alexandra, or not.

I like it, but I, like [livejournal.com profile] dustkitty said, work/live near an area called Alexandria so I wouldn't use it. Plus, Lexi is cute. There's also Ali and Alexa and soo many other nicknames to choose from as she grows :)

I totally read your post in my head with a Scottish/Irish accent, since you say "Wee" instead of little.

'tis cute.

I like it, but I like Alexandra a lot better. Either way, I'd use Ally or Alex as a nickname instead of Lexi.

ok, i'm biased b/c it's my name. and lemme tell you, unless ppl realize that there are TWO seperate names (Alexandra & Alexandria) - it's annoying as hell for teachers/adults to hear my nn and automatically put down 'Alexandra' (or 'Alex').

so you and she may still have to deal with that. and i personally, HATED it when ppl would go, 'oh Alexandria! how pretty. i can call you Lexi right? or Lexus?" wtf?! NO! lol so i can't stand that nn. also, b/c i get flashbacks to superman...

there are other nn's though that your kid can choose from as she grows:
Alex, Ale/Ali/Ally, Andria, Xandria... so if you like Lexi than go for it. :) but let her know she has options ha ha ha.

my nn is Alix, but my dad gave it to me since he named me after Egypt, but also had a soft spot for Russian history. so i'm really partial to my nn. :D

there are worse names to give your kid. Alexandr(i)a is a sturdy and long lasting name. it's not uber popular, but common enough that people will know how to spell it. It's timeless i guess.
