[identity profile] seksimaggie.livejournal.com posting in [community profile] babynames
I noticed that most of my favorite names are German. So I went to www.babynamesworld.com and did an origin search for German/Germanic names, and made a list of the ones I really like. I found a ton of girls names, not very many boys names. Also, if there's a name that I like (like Isabelle for example), and it was listed but I didn't like the German spelling (Isabell), I didn't put it on my list.

The names that were already my favorites, that inspired this search, are in bold.

GIRLS
Adelai
Adelaide
Alice
Allison
Amelia
Annelise
Arietta
Aubrey [It's listed as unisex name, but I only like it for girls]
Ava
Aveline
Caroline
Charlotte
Elodie
Emmaline/Emmeline
Evelyn
Genevieve
Harriet
Hattie [I would only use it as a nickname, but it's listed as a name on its own]
Heidi
Henrietta
Lorelai
Lottie [I would only use it as a nickname, but it's listed as a name on its own]
Lydia
Matilda
True

BOYS
Charles
Emery
Henry
Keifer
Miles
William

--

Second Edit: A lot of these names are listed under other origins AS WELL, but according to www.babynamesworld.com, they're all German or Germanic, which are not the same. :]

Also, I'm not trying to argue a case here, I'm just stating that this particular source told me these names can be traced to German OR Germanic. If you disagree with my source, that's fine.

To be honest, I don't believe any of the boy's names are originally German, and neither are most of the girl's names.

Germanic makes more sense though.

I think it's origins may be Germanic. According to behindthename.com (I know the word of a website is not law) it's the Norman version of Alberich which is German.

That being said I've been to Germany and nobody could even pronounce my name (...Aubrey).

oh dylan is easy ^^

but it depends on the age of your relatives...I just asked my parents to say dylan and abrey and they dont have any problem with dylan but asked again how to say abrey but after that it wasnt a problem ... and they never learned english...

but some people really have a problem to say it

my nephews name is vincent and this name is not so rare here but some call him vincenz !! O.o
even after telling them that it isnt Z they dont get it ^^

Germanic names are not interchangeable with German names. Germanic names usually descend from Germanic tribes -- such as, the Angles, the Saxons, the Franks and the Goths, to name a few. Remembering that they swept Europe in the very early Middle Ages, they give no weight to most names today. For example, Charlotte. It's a feminine form of Charles, which is a Germanic name (Charlemagne, for example) but is French, not German.

And Genevieve isn't derived from a Germanic name, or German at all -- it's French, originally from Gaulish which is related linguistically to modern Gaelic, Breton and Welsh.

What's the pronunciation on that? Ava is my favorite girl name but I have been looking for something similar since Ava is getting so popular right now.
