Which spelling do you prefer..Killian or Cillian.
I know Cillian is the more traditional way of spelling it, but do you think some people might mispronounce it like "Sillian"?
But on the other hand, if it were Killian, would people automatically think of Killian brand beer?

I agree, Cillian would often be read as Sillian. Killian looks better to me, anyway.

I've never heard of the brand of beer, but that could be because I don't drink beer. Just don't use it in a sibset with Brandy, Sherry, or Bailey?

Everyone I've heard mention him has called him "sillian". :(

I agree, I like Cillian better; however, I'm not too keen on the name in general because it has the word "kill" in it.

The K looks too harsh. I like Cillian.

Even though you say how it is pronounced in your post, I keep reading "Sillian"...

I was taught that a "c" followed by an "i" always has the sound of "s". I know normal pronunciation rules don't always work for proper names, but I can't seem to make myself stop on this one.

It also reminds me of "cilia", those little hair-like things that paramecia use to swim around...

As for Killian reminding some one of the beer brand... I happen to like Killian's Irish Red... :)

Some people would read Cillian as "Sillian", and, yeah, he would have to correct them. I just don't think of it as a big deal--I mean, my name is Janine; noooo one gets it right on the first try. It doesn't bother me to point it out and I don't understand the ~oh noes someone will mispronounce it~ issue.

I agree with the poster who said Killian looks wrong. I like Cillian.

that's how I say it lol. my Francophile dad and grandmother are all "zhaa-neen" about it but yeah. I'm not surprised that you DO know how to say it, but...well let's just say I must never have had you as a substitute teacher

I've never heard the name Cillian before, but I read it as "Sillian" initially, until I read the rest of the post. I think it would be mispronounced A LOT if you go with the C spelling.

But then, Killian has "kill" in it, which is kind of weird. Plus the beer.

I would not use this name haha.

yeah that is what makes Killian icky. Cillian is cool, if the kid doesn't mind correcting ppl the rest of his life?

Everyone will mispronounce Cillian, but I still like it better than Killian. Besides, almost EVERYONE gets their name pronounced nowadays.

And yes, I would think of the beer. He'd have to put up with a lot of "Haha, was that what your mom was drinking?" jokes

I have never heard of killian brand beer...only kilkenny :)

Personally, I wouldn't use a name with the word "kill" in it, not even if it's just by sound. It's too harsh, IMO.

I prefer Killian. Cillian I would worry would be mispronounced as Sillian. Could use Ian as a nn.

i dont like the name to begin with, but i would never name someone killian. i mean, i am not keen on the fact that the first four letters are kill.

There is a dancer in the Ballet Arizona company named Killian and that's what I think of. Her name always jumps off the page at me in the program because there's a Jillian, too. I'm not too fond of the name, though.

Cillian looks better, but I'm sure it will get mispronounced. However, I don't believe in changing the spelling of a name just to make it simpler to pronounce.. and Killian looks dumb to me.
