So Tiger Woods named his daughter Sam Alexis. What do you think of a little girl just being named 'Sam'. Not short for Samantha or Samara or anything. I'm wondering because since I'm not crazy about any girls names right now I was thinking 'what if I just used one of my favourite boys names on a girl?' I do not want to use Edward or Maxwell on a girl, don't worry, but I was thinking..what about Sam? Just plain old Sam.

I know the trend of 'boys names on girls' is pretty annoying to everyone and it annoys me too (hellooo, james is a boys name!) but since girls named Samantha have been going to Sam forever now, do you think it falls into the same category?

One other thing, my father's name is Robert Alexander (Robert is a family name, it goes on for generations, including my brother) but he goes by Sandy. Have you ever heard Sandy short for Alexander before? It always used to make me laugh when I was a kid because I thought Sandy just came out of nowhere. I understand it comes from the end of Alexander but I'm just wondering, is it common?

Edit: I've been convinced(ish) that it's not a good idea. lol. Do any of you guys know of a website where I can search for names that start with Sam or have Sam as a nickname? I'm not a fan of Samantha but maybe another name would appeal to me. =]

I don't like it. I'm not down on unisex names, but I don't like Sam as a full name for either gender. I like Samuel for a boy, Samantha or Samara for a girl.

I HATE James and Logan on girls. I can see a LOT of names as unisex, but not either of those. (I don't like Logan on a boy either, though...)

What if it's not a matter of wanting to give a girl a traditional boy's name just so that she sounds "strong"? What if I just like the sound of it, and want to use it on a girl?

I quite like the names Saraf and Seraiah/Sarayah - they are boy hebrew names, but raise quite a few eyebrows around me english friends.

I'm okay with some unisex names, but I'm a big fan of using a full name, even if you're going to call them by the nickname most of the time, just so that it gives them more official options to choose from.

I have a couple friends named Samantha, all of whom mostly go by Sam, but I can't imagine them using that on anything official.

Sam is a characteristicly male name in the standard form. Simple as that.

I have actually met one other person who's name was Aleksandr (spelt that way) who went by Sandy and later Sandro (as he entered middle school and got beat up for being called "a girls name".. and sadly there were three Sandy's in my class that were girls.. and only one a boy).

I think it's all how you pronounce it to see Sandy.

In A Wrinkle In Time, one of the twin brothers was Alexander-going-by-Sandy. That's the only place I've ever heard it, but I've only known a few Alexanders personally and two of those three went by Alex. The other went by Xan.

I don't like just-Sam on a girl *or* a boy. It's a nickname, to me, that suits either boys or girls, but shouldn't be on its own.

In the book The Westing Game, one of the characters is named Alexander but goes by Sandy.

I didn't like it at all. It kind of really irked me, since when Samanthas go by Sam it's justified (or any other Sam-whatevers) and I never think twice, but when he outright just named his daughter Sam it seemed very (1) incomplete and (2) ridiculous.

Good thing she has a girly middle name to go by.

I don't mind naming girls with a guys' name, as long as it at least can be honestly universal (which doesn't come often, because I still think that Morgan and Jordan are strictly for boys, but okay). Guys are more tricky, but it can be done. Just have to be careful about it.

I'm a Samaria (suh-MAR-ree-uh), but once in a blue moon I find somebody who gives me the nickname Sam and actually sticks with it past a month or two.

Why isn't it a good idea? "Sam" is fine. Most people won't care it's not short for Samantha or that it's traditionally a boys name. I wouldn't let the opinions of people in this community influence your decision too much; there's probably less than 100 active members and thats not a good representative of the population at all.

Okay, but can we agree that Sam is better than Tiger?

I re-challenge you to find good animal names. :)
