[identity profile] http://users.livejournal.com/--fourinchesx/ posting in [community profile] babynames
Hi, I don't post very often, nor do I comment very often, but today I have a question.

I've been seeing the name James used for girls lately, and I am perplexed.
Can anyone explain the occurance, is it a trend, or something?
I've ALWAYS seen James as a boys name (it's very masculine).

Thanks in advance.

I have no idea how it got around, but I don't think it's a recent trend, as in season 4 of Nip/Tuck Jacqueline Bisset plays a character named James (and she's..let's say.. not a young woman)
She explains in one episode that James in french is pronounced as "j'aime" (which is not, btw, it's not a name in french) like the phrase "i love you".
But I don't have a clue where Ryan Murphy picked that up.

I love some guys names on girls, but there are some I like the other way around too. I really only like Ryan, Devon and James though.

"but there are some I like the other way around too"

I've toyed with Clare, Renee and Eshnee for boys.

And I love originally boy names but now mainly girl names on boys, like Courtney and Whitney.

I think a boy is much more likely to get made fun of in school for being named Elizabeth or Anna then a girl is for being named Devon or James.

It's a trend... using boys' names on girls. It's pretty tacky, in my opinion, but hey.

i might entertain the thought of using it as a middle name, but only because it is my grandfather's name. he and my grandmother raised me, so in his honor, maybe. but, no need to really think about it, because i used it on my son for his middle name lol.

It's a horrible trend that takes great boy's names and makes them female (like Aubrey, Kaelin and Kyle). Sadly it's my generation ruining it for everyone.. stupid people.

Aubrey's always been a girls name to me.

Maybe to you, but it has not always been a girls name.. much like Ashley and Whitney.

I can see where some names could cross over like Casey, Avery, Ashley. Masculine names like James just sound silly in my opinion.

I like James on a girl, but I also like Jane on a boy so my opinion probably isn't the majority.

Exactly. I just don't like the Jayne spelling so much. I went to school with a Jayne and our biology called her Jane-ee all year. She actually argued with the poor girl about how to pronounce her name! Jane is kinda boring to me so I do tend to bastardize it as Jain.

My ex insisted on James for a girl, even though I've loved the name on a boy since I was six years old.

I love James on a girl!
It's just taste I guess, I heard it on a girl once and I loved it.

I like James on a girl, but not Jaime/Jamie on a boy. There's something really feminine about the sound of the letter J to me. It's curvy and warm.

I would like it if people weren't just doing it because it's trendy, I think. James as a nickname for a more neutral or female name would be safe.

I've loved James for a girl since I was little and it pisses me off that it's trendy now to do so.

The only boy names I would actually consider using are Ryan and Devon. Both sound feminine/not strong masculine sound.
