Given that I am utterly without religion, my current obsession with Virtue names may seem a little weird. Verity was one of my favorite names before I actually realized it was a Virtue name (I found it in a Miss Marple story when I was a kid). Anyway, below are the VIrtue names that I would use. Suggestions for middle names would be greatly appreciated. Also, nick name suggestions if any come to mind. Thanks!

Verity
Sage
Providence
Fate
Ever
Clarity
Wisdom
Creedence (Creed)
Just
Justice
Mercy

My great grandmother was Ernestine Clementine Justice. She HATED Clementine so much she changed it to Caroline. I like the meaning, but the first thing I think of when I hear the name is the song, Oh my darling Clementine. There is also Clemency and Clemence, but I'm not sure how I feel about those.

Evanescence is a complete guilty pleasure. I love the meaning, Evan is a great nn, but then there is the band....which is the first thing most people with think of....and I've discovered that most people don't realize its a word.

Thanks for your help and suggestions!

I go through cycles of liking virtue names and disliking them...I particularly love the more uncommon ones, such as Clarity and Verity. I like Mercy as a nickname for Mercia.

I also quite like Ever, though mostly as it is a Hebrew name:

I pronounce it mer-cee-ah.

I thought of a couple others you may like: Virtue (yeah, obvious I know) and Unity (this was in my local paper last week, and it's become such a GP of mine).

Do you want to combine virtue names or pair one with another name? I always want to pair Ever with another E sound name, like Ever Ezekiel, Ever Jericho, Ever Edmund, Ever Erich, or Ever Lovel.

I didn't know Evanescence is a word! (I must add that English isn't my native language, haha =)). Interesting. I thought of the band too, though. But then again, how many people will think of the band in ten years from now?

Personally I'm not a fan of virtue names, because it just seems to me like sticking a label on your kid, beforehand. Like Wisdom: please be wise! Or Verity: Tell the truth! You know? Maybe that's just me. Sage is kind of pretty though =) And I like Clementine!

I'm afraid the nickname Creed sounds too much like greed, which would be a pity.

Prudence is actually my favorite virtue name.

I like Mercedes instead of Mercy (or as a full version of it), that's a favorite of mine. And you know, I like Clementine! ^^

Out of your choices though, Sage is definitely my #1.

XD Aw, that kinda stinks. I don't really think of the car too much, for some reason.

Verity- pretty
Sage- I think of the plant
Providence- I think of.. pantene pro-v..
Fate- rhymes with hate
Ever- I could like this.. possibly
Clarity- Not so bad. i know someone calle Clarrie
Wisdom- Tooth
Creedence (Creed)- HORRIBLE.
Just- William?
Justice- Terrible
Mercy- trashy

My favourite name happens to be a virtue name, Felicity. I also know someone called Charity. I'm fond of Hope too.

Evenescence isn't so terrible, but the nickname Evan on a girl is. I'd rather see Evie.

Ack, I'd hate the name Ernestine more than Clementine.

I don't like virtue names because of the connotations that come with them. Obviously, I'm not religious at all either. That said, I had no idea Sage was religious name.

I'm not a huge fan of virtue names. I like Grace, that is probably about it though.

my seven year old neice has a little friend named mercy. its intriguing to me, a little bit sad to be a name, to me. faith is my favorite, but that isnt on your list. i have often thought of using love as a middle name.

sage is ok, but its got that hippie dippie thing going for it, and theres nothing wrong with that, but i think its kind of overused in those circles and i kind of roll my eyes when i hear it. i get the "trying too hard" vibe from it i guess.

Why would it matter that you are without religion? Virtue is regardless of religion ;-)

I love the names Fate, Verity, Mercy and Justice (Evanescence too, but I think it would take a while for the knowledge of that band to simmer down in our internet age).

Verity Marie
Verity Anne
Verity Leigh
Fate Constance (or vice versa)
Fate Brianna
Fate Aliese
Mercy Rose
Mercy Alexandria
Mercy Evanescence
Justice Mae
Justice Leah
Justice Caroline (as a tip of the hat to your grandmother)

These suggestions are nice, but I actually find "Fate" a little hard to pronounce in these combinations. In my mouth it turns to "Faith."

I kind of think Fate makes a better middle name. I could think of a lot better ways to put it as a middle name :-P

plus, it's EvanescenCe :D

I'm not fond of virtue names if you're using the same word the language you speak. I really like word names, but I have a tendency to want to translate them in a different language so they're not obvious.

For example, if someone were thinking of naming their daughter Morning Star, I'd suggest them to use Danica (original prn. DAH-nee-tsah), which means exactly that :)

I love virtue names, even if I probably wouldn't use one. I always thought Propriety would be the ultimate virtue name. One day hopefully I'll get to use it on a character.

There was a man in my family tree named 'Experience'.

ok this is funny cause I am hooked on Prue and middle name (grandmother maiden name) of Justice.

Unfortunately Thomas Aquinas has a book : Prudence Justice Temperance Fortitude or something ACK!!! I'm NOT religious either!!!

I love Clementine (Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind)

I like Sage and Justice out of what is listed.

Do NOT like Mercy. Probably because the only Mercy I know is this rival for my best friend ca. age 6.

edit: I did have Prue Justice, but after reading about that, it will have to be a different middle name

Hm. I like the name Justice. That's about it, for those.

I would never name my child Creedence, because of CCR, and then the nickname Creed.. well.

I LOVE Clementine! Guilty pleasure, definitely. Not Clemency or Clemence, but Clementine. :)

I didn't realize Evanescense was a real word, lol.. And I wouldn't name my child that, because of the band.. and.. Amy Lee's horrible in-person vocal talents. =/

Haha, yeah. I was like '.. D:'

I mean, Creed is cool and all I guess. I'm not too into any band, but.. eh. I just.. couldn't name my kid after a band. =/

I'm so glad Patience and Chastity aren't on this list. :)
