Feb. 19th, 2008 03:03 pmToday on the Tyra show, they talked about names and how people perceive others based on their name. So I wanted to know what you guys think when you hear these names, not just if you like it or not, but what ethnicity you think that person is and what you think that person is like.
Here are some of the names that were on the show:
Deedrica
Ashleigh
Jose
Sajida
Christine
Maria
and here are just some of my friends:
Kristina
Brittany
Holly
Tyler
Britta
Jameka

Jose - Hispanic
Sajida - Middle Eastern
Christine - White, I guess, though I don't get any strong mental image with that name
Maria - Hispanic

Date: 2008-02-19 10:40 pm (UTC)I think when I was a kid my sister told me once I'm not allowed to get white dolls. I personally never liked the blond ones anyway. I usually got Teresa or Kira But I definitely remember having at least two Christies back then.
So I will forever think of "Barbies friend Christie" when I hear that name.

Jose - hispanic, hint of a moustache
Sajida - arabic name so i would assume african-american, african or middle eastern. i like the name and picture someone wuiet but friendly
Christine - in the american context i would assume asian (i'm not from the us, just live here). elsewhere, neutral name, average person
Maria - greek or hispanic, motherly
Kristina - brazilian, tan, pretty, into sports
Brittany - white trash but that's probably related to the famous example. heh
Holly - waitress type, resolute, kind of mannish

Date: 2008-02-21 06:42 am (UTC)Deedrica and Sajida I would assume were African American, or maybe Sajida would be South Asian; Jose and Maria I would assume were Latina. Christine and Ashleigh I would assume were both white. I had a Christine as a coworker this summer and so I associate the name with a blonde, bubbly, sunny, sunglasses-wearing California girl (even though Christine was from Michigan, but one would think she was from CA!) Names have never really evoked personalities from me, except for names of people I know.
Same thing with Kristina and Brittany -- I know both a Kristina and a Brittany and they are the only people I know who spell their names that way, so I have associations with personalities and ethnicities. Kristina is a white public policy major from California, but she's very East Coast (she goes to school in DC) and kind of an activist. Brittany was my roommate from my freshman year of college, and an economics major destined for Goldman Sachs, so I think of that.
The other names I can only associate ethnicities: I see Jameka as an African American girl, Britta as Eastern European, Holly as white (very white -- like Swedish blonde-with-blue-eyes)...Tyler, I dunno. I always thought of girls with boys' names as very outgoing and friendly, but I can't picture an ethnicity. Funny.
