[identity profile] secret-x-stars.livejournal.com posting in [community profile] babynames
hi, new here, obsessed with names, i plan on posting here quite often, i had no idea this community existed! haha.

I HAVE A QUESTION. i don't know if anyone would happen to know, but i think it's related enough.

i was cursed enough to be named Jessica (no offense to other Jessica's, it's just 'not me'). the rest of my name is pretty awful, too. at the age of 12, i had decided that i want to be called Lorelei Black. i'm nearly 17 now, and i've been deadset on it. i'm still deciding on a middle name, i've been tossing around a few... but i'm positive i want to do this. almost everyone i know calls me Lorelei.

my question is, has anyone else done this here, and could they describe the process and fees, especially? i have a job and my parents have no objection to me doing it before i'm eighteen... i really want it done because i'm starting college in a month, and i want my named changed as early as i can as to not confuse everyone, and so i can have it on my degree (obviously it won't be done in a month, haha, but yeah).

so if anyone can help, that'd be awesome. :D

i dont know where you live...but in my homestate (Alabama) all you had to do was go to the social security office and fill out paperwork...the fee used to be $20 but it might be more now...then that office sent it whereever it needed to go. Once you get the paperwork back, then you just have to go around town and everywhere and update the records (like driver's license, medical records, whatever-most places (like doctors offices and such) just make a copy and keep it in their records. So anyway-try calling your nearest social security office or city hall, someone can point you in the right direction. Good luck!

I've wanted to name a baby Lorelei. I pronounce it "Lor-uh-lie." There is a nice song by Styx, a 70's rock band:

Styx - Lorelei Lyrics
When I think of Lorelei my head turns all around
As gentle as a butterfly she moves without a sound
I call her on the telephone, she says be there by eight
Tonight's the night she's moving in and I can hardly wait

The way she moves, ooh-ooh
I gotta say
Lorelei let's live together
Brighter than the stars forever
Lorelei let's live together
Brighter than the stars forever

Her eyes become of Paradise, she softly speaks my name
She brightens every lonely night, no one's quite the same
She calls me on the telephone, she says be there by eight
Tonight's the night she's moving in, it's time to celebrate

The way she moves, ooh-ooh
I gotta say
Lorelei let's live together
Brighter than the stars forever
Lorelei let's live together
Brighter than the stars forever

Lorelei is the name of cliff overlooking the Rhine (or Rhone?) River in Germany. Sailors used to shipwreck there often and so they made up a legend about a beautiful woman who stood at the top of the hill and lured sailors to their doom by singing to them in a voice that put a spell on them.

There's a poem about Die Lorelei (the Lorelei in German)

I cannot tell why this imagined
Sorrow has fallen on me
The ghost of an unburied legend
That will not let me be.

The air is cool, and twilight
Flows from the quiet Rhine;
A mountain alone in the high light
Catches the faltering shire

One rosy peak half gleaming
Reveals, enthroned in air,
A goddess lost in dreaming
Who combs her golden hair.

With a golden comb she is combing
Her hair as she sings a song;
Heard and reheard in the gloaming
It hurries the night along.

The boatman has heard what has bound him
In throes of a strange, wild love.
He is blind to the reefs that surround him,
Who sees but the vision above.

And lo, the wild waters are springing -
The boat and the boatman are gone...
Then silence. And this with her singing,
The Lorelei has done.

So much better than a Styx song or a character on Gilmore Girls. :)

The procedure varies from state to state, as does the cost. Google your state and "name change." That should get you started.

http://www.nycourts.gov/courthelp/forms.html

Scroll down to civil law forms, then it lists the forms for minors and adults. It'd probably be easier to wait until you were 18 to change it from that standpoint.

What is your current middle name? Would it go with Lorelei? (by the way I think it is such a lovely name)

Hi, great to meet you :)
Lorelei is so pretty.

I'm in the process of changing my name too, not saying what from but it'll be to Sage Cerridwen. Keeping my original surname, as my ancestry is important to me.
Am going to do it either October '06, or the one after that (my birthday is that month). I'm in college, and want to end up with the least amount of paperwork to deal with.

Am British myself, so wouldn't know about the process in NY. Seems pretty straightforward though. Think the extra expense you mentioned might come from having to replace your passport and stuff like that.

Good luck :)

Just throwing out some different ideas. I found it in an old baby name book, it's legit.

I don't have a suggestion, but I love the name Lorelie. She's my favorite Siren folktale.
