Is there a tradition or whatever to naming the kinds a -ovna, -ovich, -ovna, name

Yes, there is. You take your father's name, and add an ending. For boys the ending is "-ovich", for girls it's either "-ovna" or "-evna". For example, my father's name is Pawlo, and my patronymic (middle name) is Pawlovna. It's a bit confusing to explain.
