In the Spirit of the Season

What do you think of the name Valentine? Boy or Girl.

Or Valentina?

i hate it either way, but it's worse on a boy. it's too corny.

I 100% agree.

A dear friend is named Valentine, born on Valentine's Day. He goes by Val. I wouldn't do it, but I don't think it's so bad.

if they're named that because they were born on valentine's day, it is the only time i would condone it.

I like the name Faye Valentine, like the character in MTV's Trigun :) she's a lady, young, charming and tough.

I'm biased towards Valentina, because in Italy it's very common.
I babysat for the longest time a Valentina, so I like the name on small children, but I've seen it on adolescents and women and it loses the charm a bit. I love Tina for a nickname!! :))

I think Valentina is really cute. Valentine is alright, I guess, when it's pronounced Vah-len-TEE-neh. I definitely prefer Valentina though.
Here, the (Dutch) masculine form is Valentijn. Its pronunciation is pretty close to Vah-len-tine.

I knew a girl named Valentina. Everyone just called her Tina.

Valetine's Baby

It's my almost middle name. Didn't make it on the birth certificate (born today), but my parents consider it my middle name: Maya Valentina. I think it's nice, it has good flow.

I've met some really kind, gentle people named Valentina, but they are Latin American, so it's a little more expected (nickname: Vale, pronounced "val-eh" with a Spanish accent, as in Dona Vale).

Personally, I don't like Valentine that much, but I do think it's the kind of name that could grow on you. It would work for a certain type of person.

I like Valentine for a guy - as in I would think it was neat if I met one, but I would not choose to name my child that.

I know I really wonderful woman named Valentina. I never associated it with V-day until now. It is just her name and it seems really normal.

I love it for a girl (because of my favorite book) but I would never actually name a kid that.

Valentina

What's your favorite book?

I personally love Valentine for a boy, but I'd only use it for a middle name.

I went out with a French guy called Valentin (Val-on-ta[n]) a few years ago, who often went by Val. He wasn't born on Valentine's Day so I don't really know how he got his name. Anyway, I don't mind it too much, but I wouldn't use it.

I think it's actually a great name for a boy (too cliche on a girl, methinks), it's classic and unique at the same time, but one that is hardly ever appreciated.

[identity profile] requiem-morrow.livejournal.com 2008-02-15 03:14 am (UTC)(link)
I agree! If I had to go with it for a girl I'd go with Valentina. I love Valentine with the nn Val.

I'm not too fond of Valentina, but that's because of preferences, not because it's a bad name. =)

[identity profile] sweatydog.livejournal.com 2008-02-15 01:59 am (UTC)(link)
I heart Valentine on either.

I love Valentina as a middle name for a girl. I don't think it is corny. I've entertained the idea of calling my daughter Stella Valentina for a while now. Not sure if I will, but time shall tell :)

My babushka's (russian grandma's) name is Valentina :)

Just wondering, are you pronouncing it -teena or -tyna?

Hers is Val-en-TEEN-a.

[identity profile] sarahrose.livejournal.com 2008-02-15 11:06 pm (UTC)(link)
Bleh on both.
