Sorry about the double post, but this just came to mind.

What do you think about naming your child/ren after video game characters?

My boyfriend and I have talked about this before, and I'm not opposed as long as it's not completely-off-the-wall and not obviously a video game character's name. For instance, I love the name Leon, which happens to be one of the main character's name is Resident Evil. My boyfriend likes the name Samus (from Nintendo's Metroid), and I do too, but I feel like that name will only be associated with that character. If anything, I think I'd reserve it as a middle name.

I keep going back and forth on naming a son Link (or at least using it as a middle name) but I fear it might be too nerdy.

I really like the character, and I really like the name. Most people who hear it also really like it, but often don't know about or associate it with video games. My worry is the people who do know where it comes from! I just don't know.

And no, I don't like the name Lincoln. :p

I think Leon is fine. I mean, it's also a "normal" name, and no one has to know where it came from. I also like the name Samus. She could easily be nicknamed Sam and most people would be none the wiser if it came down to it.

Link. he'd have to be able to pull it off. I knew a kid named Tall. He was short, but none of that mattered - he was a firecracker. He carried his name well.

If our last name didn't start with a "k", we would have considered "link" pretty seriously, too.

i always joke with my boyfriend that we should name our kids after our WoW characters =p mine is klaudia and his is kaslor, so they're not completely unusual, but i think our friends would raise an eyebrow, haha.

honestly, i really like the name samus. i think its pretty and i agree with the post above, she could easily go as sam.

My hubby plays WoW. A friend on the game named their daughter Aegwyn(pn egg-win), after a character on the game. I think its rather lame.

I'm not a gamer, so I wouldn't associate Leon or Samus with games at all! I think they're both really cute names. I think, most of the time, you'll run into people who won't know where the names came from. =]

My boyfriend and I seriously consider giving a child the middle name Jin after Jin from Tekken 3 :>

I really don't see the problem -- as long as you like the name and it's not too off the wall.

The thing with gamer names - so long as you don't name your twin boys Mario and Luigi or something - is that only other gamers will recognize the name...and I've known enough hardcore gamers to know that they would all find it AWESOME for you to have named a kid after a game. ;)

It depends on the name.

Like, I wouldn't go with Zelda but I would go with Link. I wouldn't go with Mario but I would go with Leon.

When I had a mechanical baby for class three years ago I named it Tidus Scott Wildman after the Final Fantasy X character and my dad. And I still really kind of like it. Not gonna lie.

Right now, though, I'm stuck on the idea of the name Wesley with the nickname Wedge. With Wedge and Wes both it's a total homage to Star Wars. My other current favorite male names - Liam, Jack, Owen, Corran, Kieran - are all Star Wars names as well.

Now see, Zelda is at least a legitimate name. Most people associate it with Zelda Fitzgerald. The only place I've ever seen Link is on a list of awful names not to call your child! :p

See, I don't even know who Zelda Fitzgerald is and I have a feeling that if I were to ask random people on the street they'd be more likely to say, "Isn't that a video game?" than make that connection.

That's exactly who I think of when I hear the name Zelda (and the sister in Pet Semetary).

I'm a total geek, so video game names are completely cool with me.

I think Kairi from Kingdom Hearts is a pretty name. But I think most people would mispronounce it if they'd only seen it written, or would have no idea how to spell it if they'd only heard it. The only reason I'm even familiar with it is because my roommate loves the game so much and I overheard the name while he was playing one day. I'd never actually use it.

I've always liked the name Simon, and I'm fairly sure that comes from my lifelong love for Castlevania II: Simon's Quest, which is still, twenty years later, the most awesome video game of all time, in my mind. I wouldn't use this one, either, if only because it's not at the top of my list.

Yes! I fell in love with the name Kairi after playing that game! And with "Olette" after playing the second one (but think it sounds too close to "omelet" to actually use!).

I could never bring myself to name a kid after a video game character, but hubby and I have two cats named Gabriel Logan (Syphon Filter) and Kirby (you know, the Nintendo puff). :)
