[identity profile] hotchpot.livejournal.com posting in [community profile] babynames
So I've been doing genealogy this weekend and I came across the following names in my family tree, from the late 1700s. They lived in Massachusetts.

Mother: Silence (!)
Father: Amos

Children:

Charles
Enoch
Jephtha (M)
Achsah (M)
Polly
Adah
Zillah (F)
and Permilla (F)

Silence's sister was named Submit

And in other news, what do you think of the name Thomas? What comes into your mind when you think of it? I was watching 1776 today and I just thought, wow, Tom is a really cute name for a boy. Sort of like Sam--it just sounds like a nice person.

There are some puritan names I like (mercy, verity, providence, clarity) but Silence and Submit make my skin crawl.

I quite love Adah or Ada.

Wow....Silence would be kind of cool...if I didn't know her sister's name was Submit...that's kind of disturbing O_o Zillah makes me think of lost souls by Poppy Z. Brite :P...Amos: Anus *LOL*....and I agree with Monalyssasmile- Adah is very pretty! Thomas is a nice name, and makes me think of classic writers, like Dylan Thomas and Thomas Wolfe :D

Thomas is the name of the boy I crushed on in junior high so it gives me a warm fuzzy feeling. :) I like that it gives a boy a couple options for nicknames, too.

Probably because those are no longer seen as virtues, really, though they may have been at the time (but even so, they seem strange).

Silence and Submit make me think of Papa Justify in Skeleton Key, which is a disturbing association.

Apart from Charles those are the worst names I've ever seen.

Thomas is a favorite of mine. I can't really think of anything specific that comes to mind when I think of it, except, "Nicccccce."

Silence and Submit are horrible. I hope they grew up to be rebels.

I'm naming my little boy Thomas with the nn Tommy. It's a family name, but I like it and would have considered it anyway.
