[identity profile] flightybynature.livejournal.com posting in [community profile] babynames
Hola everyone! I joined the other day, and I figured that it's time that I actually post some names that I groove on, instead of just shooting down other names X_x . My husband and I are not yet knocked up, but we're going to start trying next year, and playing around with names is my way of obsessing about it :P . Our last name is Van Buskirk....pronounced like it looks...Van Bus Kirk :D (we hear Vanbuskie a lot...and Vanbruskirk :P ). Our best friend passed away 2 years ago, and we will definitely be incorporating part of his name (Michael Walker) in some form or another, either first or last name- any other forms of Michael that I haven't listed would be much appreciate! Anyway- here's the list!

Boy:

Alastair
Kingsley
Hunter
Cedric
Walker
Dorian
Fallon
Finnegan

Indiana
Sage
Rohan
Jean (like John, but with a soft J- my husband's family is descended from the pirate, Jean Lafitte)
Sebastian

Girl:

Madaleine
Matilda
Elsa
Stella
Isabelle
Michaela
Michel (mee shel)
Maya
Amelia
Eowyn
Piper

(Michael is like black...it goes with everything :P )

So yeah, rip into them! Be Brutal! :P

[Combos/Boys] Jean Michael, Walker Indiana (prefer Indiana Walker, though), Sebastian Walker.

Alastair - Very clasic English; nice but maybe too classic
Kingsley - I like it even despite the Harry Potter connection
Hunter - Eh.
Cedric - I really like it
Walker - Texas Ranger? Really? With the whole Chuck Norris revival?
Dorian - It's okay
Fallon - Hate it; knew a girl with the name once
Finnegan - I love Finn but not Finnegan
Austen - No; I don't mind Austin like the city though
Indiana - I love it but I'd NEVER use it; I love the nickname Indy
Sage - I really like it
Rohan - Isn't that a nation in LotR?
Jean - Middle name only
Sebastian - Not too bad
Madaleine - Okay
Matilda - Not a fan at all
Elsa - Not a favorite
Stella - All I can think is stripper; sorry
Isabelle - Nice but overused
Michaela - Better than Mikaylah or any similiar spelling;
Michel - Male name
Maya - OKay
Amelia - Really like it
Eowyn - Not so much
Piper - Eh.
Emma - Okay; overused
Chloe - Okay; kind of cutesy

Michael Walker Van Buskirk is probably my favorite combination. Just straight up naming the kid after him.

Michelle, Michel, Michaela, Meical (Welsh), Mihai (Romanian), Mitchell, Miles

Madaleine Elsa Michel

Michael Finnegan
Michael Sage
Michael Austen
Jean Michael
Michael Rohan
Alastair Walker
Michael Sebastian
Sebastian Walker

I'd try to stay away from names like Indiana, Sage, Rohan, Kingsley, and Fallon as first names. Any of them would be fine as middles, but with your last name that you said gets misspelled/mispronounced often, something like Michael, Sebastian, or Cedric would probably be best -- recognizable, but not trendy or overused or anything. I love all three.

For girls, I'd stay away from Eowyn for the same reason, and Emma, Chloe, and Maya because they're quite trendy/popular and are kind of cutesy in that cute-on-a-five-year-old, but hard-to-take-seriously-on-an-adult kind of way.

Stella is my favorite for girls, but I also love Amelia, Madaleine, and Matilda almost as much:) My favorite for boys is definitely Michael, followed by Cedric and Finnegan (I love the nn Finn).

Boy:

Alastair - Like it
Kingsley - Too pompous
Hunter - Not into the Medieval occupation names, but this is one of the less annoying ones
Cedric - Like it
Walker - Surname
Dorian - I hated the book, so I'm biased against it
Fallon - No
Finnegan - Well, a character in a story I wrote was called 'Finnegan O'Fear' and he was an evil Irish magician, so I can't really judge this name seriously
Austen - Really hate it, so trendy
Indiana - Definitely not good
Sage - Nope
Rohan - The Riders of Rohan! Yeah, no.
Jean - Very plain and common, I don't really like it on its own
Sebastian - Pretentious and overdone

Girl:

Madaleine - Like it
Matilda - Like it
Elsa - Eh, it kind of reminds me of a cow
Stella - Okay, but overdone
Isabelle - Like it
Michaela - Meh, at least it's spelt right
Michel (mee shel) - This is a male name
Maya - Okay
Amelia - Love it
Eowyn - I love Lord of the Rings and everything, but...
Piper - Hate it. It sounds so silly. Piper? The pied piper? What's she piping, exactly? Come on.
Emma - Nice
Chloe - Not my style, but okay

Just a note (but an important one): Michelle is the female version, if you spell it Michel a french would totally assume she is a he ;)

Also, Madaleine looks mispelled. I'd stick with Madeleine (also because I like it hehe).

I like Maya! Is it M-eye-ah or May-ah? I can never tell whenever I see the -ay- :/

Out of your boys I like Austin in this spelling, but Austen might be after Jane Austen?

Last note: Isabelle Michelle is way too rhymey for a combo

Alastair - Love
Kingsley - Too surnamey, and makes me think of Harry Potter
Hunter - Don't like. Too surnamey.
Cedric - Like, HP reference, but it's a nice name!
Walker - Too surnamey, but as it's the surname of your best friend, I appreciate your reasons! I'd still use it as a middle though!
Dorian - Don't like
Fallon - Don't like
Finnegan - Very Irish! Also soo surnamey for me
Austen - Not my style, but I guess it's ok.
Indiana - Jones? Too strong association.

Rohan - Like it a lot. LOTR association though.
Jean - Pirates? Automatically gets a thumbs up! Haha, and I like the name!
Sebastian - Like

Madaleine - Ugh, so over used!
Matilda - Like
Elsa - It's ok, looks more like a nn to me though!
Stella - Don't like
Isabelle - Like :)
Michaela - Dislike this name a lot
Michel - Looks like Michael, however you pronounce it... Why not Michelle?
Maya - Kind if like.
Amelia - Never liked this name personally, but there's nothing wrong with it!
Eowyn - Like it, buit my automatic thought is LOTR.
Piper - Too masculine for a girl, and I really hate this name!
Emma - Love, classic!
Chloe - Kind of like, but looks really childish to me.
