[identity profile] girlsteve.livejournal.com posting in [community profile] babynames
Recent posts got me thinking on my mothers list of maybe names, and I was interested to hear peoples comments

So, I'm a girl called Steve, just Steve on the birth certificate. I've grown to love it, but suffice to say I didn't used to and it brings with it certain ... difficulties. That said, in many ways I did have a lucky escape:

Names my mother was considering:

Storm (this was her number one choice right up until the last minute - she was still umming and ahhing when she registered me as Steve)
Angel
September
Friday

On the other hand, she also gave serious consideration to

Rae
Lois
Antonia
Sian
Natalie

Random selection, eh?

Any thoughts? Any near misses you would like to share?

i'm just not fond of the way it sounds, and given the time of my birth, i would have been plagued with little mermaid jokes throughout school.

My little brother Ian would have been Jamaica if he had been a girl. Ugh. Jamaica.

I would say Steve on a girl is weird.. my best friend is called Steve ..well, she's Christine, but to everyone she's known/introduced as Steve.
It's so confusing to most people who expect her to be a boy, & she gets asked "um.. why?" quite a lot.
I have to say "So Steve.. who's a girl btw.." when I'm talking about her.

Storm - Don't mind this actually!
Angel- euw tacky to the max
September- A bit.. emo, dare I say it.
Friday- Like Man Friday? just, no..

On the other hand, she also gave serious consideration to

Rae- Ugly
Lois- I like
Antonia- Lovely, but you'd have been shortened to Toni no doubt, which is worse than Steve IMO!
Sian- Lovely
Natalie- Hate, always have.

None of mine are really interesting. My mom considered naming me Phoebe after Holden's sister in Catcher in the Rye and also Roxanne. I know up until my actual birth she was planning to spell my first name Merry instead of Mary. Then she had a horrible labor and decided I wasn't a very Merry baby after all hah. Even though I don't like my first name I think Mary Madalyn looks better with the matching a's anyways. Matthew was her boy name.

I love Antonia, Natalie, and Lois. Antonia Rae would have been gorgeous. On the other hand, I'm glad your mom didn't name you September, Friday, Angel, or Storm;)

My dad wanted to name me Erin Karen, haha. Both great names on their own but just...eh. And my last name ends in 'en', too!

Haha, speaking of your mom's weird taste in names (everything from Lois to Storm)...

The woman who writes the blog dooce.com (http://www.dooce.com) has a brother named Ranger and a sister named September. Her name? Heather. Yes, that's right. September, Ranger, and Heather. Talk about eclectic taste in names;)

I was almost a Melissa. I like my name Alexandra better.

Stevie is my #1 name for a girl. My hubby vetoed it.

My mom was going to name me Devon or Devin but my dad interfered, he wanted a girlier name so I got stuck with Britni.

I would have much preferred to be Devin or Devon.

No offence, but I think all of those are better than Steve. :-\ I'm glad you like your name, though!

My mum liked the name Celeste. I know it's not horrible, but it's a bit too froofy (is that a word?) for my taste. She was also considering Stephanie, which I'm really glad she didn't pick, and Emily, which I like, but I'm glad I wound up with the slightly less common 'Alison'.

I do like September and Friday.

I was nearly a Sarah Nicole (I'm a Meghan Marie) so either way I've got the early 90's names going on for me.

Of the names your mom was considering, I like September (I'd never use it, though) and Natalie.

If I'd been a boy, I would have been Sean Christopher. My mom really wanted a girl, though, and prayed and promised to name her daughter after the three holiest women in the Bible (I think? Maybe?), Mary, Anne, and Elizabeth, if she had a girl. She wasn't very creative about combining the names, though, and went for Marianne Elizabeth, which would have been really confusing for people. Lucky, my dad thought so, too, and she got really creative and somehow came up with Bethany Rose (because Beth is short for Elizabeth, and -any looks like Anne, and one of Mary's titles in the Catholic Church is "The Rose"... I think).

I was almost named Blair, Stephanie, Natalie, Marissa, Marley, or Marnie.

I wish my mom had picked Blair in the end (it's my favorite name!) or even Stephanie.

If I were a boy, I would have been Brian or Neil.

Stephen is one of my favourite names so Steve for a girl really isn't too bad to me. Just... weird.

I think my mum liked the name Emily so I might have been called that, but I guess they decided Amelia was better. She also liked the names Hugh and Declan for boys. Um. I'm glad my sister and I are girls (no problem with Hugh, but Declan is horrific).

My dad wanted to name me Kathleen-Kelly Eleanor. Yes, with a hyphen. My mum vetoed that (thank goodness!) and kept considering Alexis (after her favourite uncle) or Morgan. Eventually, they agreed on Erin. If I were a boy, I would have been John (dad's name, and his dad's name, and so on), which ended up being my brother's name. He would have been Kathleen, Kelly (but not together!) or Alexis if he were a girl.

My mother liked Rafaela a lot, but my father insisted Americans would mess it up. They both liked Tessa, so Tessa I became.

If I'd been a boy, I would have been Bruce — which is one of my all-time least favorite names, and has been since well before I found out about my near miss with it in an alternate gender universe. No idea how my Brazilian parents decided Bruce was okay in the first place...

There's something about month names that I like, but many of them (September, for instance), I consider more guilty pleasure names. Or pet names. Same with day names, and Friday seems like a nice tip of the hat to one of my favorite movies, His Girl Friday, but it would also make me think of Man Friday from Robinson Crusoe, who, even at 10 years old, just made me sad. Storm is another name that I like in theory, but don't see actually working on a person (unless they were maybe a mutant).

Was Steve chosen to honor someone? Did she just really like the sound of it?

My mother had decided that if she had one daughter, she'd name her Heather, and if she had a second, she'd name her Michelle. Or maybe she'd name the first one Michelle, and the second one Heather. My older sister ended up a Heather (don't really like that name, but I think it's better than mine), but I escaped Michelle (don't really like that name, although Shell or Shelly is cute) and was named Stephanie (which I don't especially enjoy, but I like being called Steph).

I'm Chinese and was born with the name Jiayi (pronounce j-eye yee), but when we moved to the US they chose an english name for me to go by. Originally, they were going to call me Peggy (ICK!), but my grandmother and uncle convinced them to go with Jacqueline. Now my name has been officially changed to Jacqueline Jiayi.

I'm not a big fan of any of those alternate names except maybe Sian or Natalie. Your mom definitely has some interesting tastes, though!

My dad wanted to name me "Loretta Lynn." I'm not making this up. He and Mom actually argued about it in the delivery room. Thank God my mom won out. :shudder:

If I had been a boy, my mom said I would've been Paul after Paul McCartney. Her backup name for me was "Stephanie," in which case I probably would've wound up a cheerleader or something.

My father wanted to name me Kimberly, but my mum vetoed that. Dad says his next choice was Alexis. Which is my name and I love it. Wasn't the least bit common when I was growing up and yet not at all considered strange or exotic. Dad said he picked it because it's the name of an old movie star - Alexis Smith. I guess he thought it'd be neat to have the same name (yes Smith is my last name).

I know a little girl named Stormie and I think it's cute on her, fits her.
My parents didn't have ANY name picked out for me so my dad bought a baby book from the gift shop and it had names scrambled on the front and the one in the biggest font was Jennifer, which is now my name.

I used to be good friends with a girl named Storm, so it seems like a normal name to me!
And I had a friend once called Stevie, but just Steve is very interesting for a girl!

I am a Claire, my parents also considered April and Olivia.
I probably would have been Cameron or Jeffery if I had been a boy, because those are my two younger brother's names.

I like Steve for a girl.

I might want to name a daughter Stevie after Stevie Nicks. But I'd probably make it short for Stephanie since that's what Stevie Nicks' name is short for, and my favorite actress is also named Stephanie.

my father (they were hippies) was DEAD SET on naming me Rainbow but my mother wouldn't have it, she really liked sarah and kate because i guess she has no imagination at all.... thank god for my older brothers crush on denise huxtable or i'd be named Sarah or Kate like every other twentysomething i know! not that i love Denise as a name, i'd probably rather be Rainbow really, haha.
if i was a boy i was going to be Deven.
