Claire is more popular than it's ever been, and although Matilda hasn't made a comeback it reminds me of the children's story, and the image of a little girl.
It's definetly being dusted off. Naming trends go in a three generation, so all these 'old fashioned' names are actually very cool.
Claire is just a wonderful name, underused but not outlandish. Definetly works as a very stylish middle name (speaking from experience, as my middle name is Clair). I'm in the UK and Claire seems to have been quite popular about 20 years ago (I have a cousin and several friends/aquantances named that, and all around that age or younger), so definetly don't think it 'old'.
I think Matilda sounds like an old lady, but then, I never read the book or saw the movie, so...I just don't care for the sound of it, either. Claire is a nice name though.
