What do you think of:
Trent?
Dana? (On a girl, I find it bordering on obnoxious. On a guy, I think it's wonderful.)
Stormy?
Vegas?
Random? (This is another one of those "girl-sounds-obnoxious-guy-sounds-cool" instances, for me.)
Steve? (Exact opposite of the above this time!)
Rafael?

Date: 2008-02-01 01:58 am (UTC)What's obnoxious about Dana on a girl? It's technically a boy's name, but it's got a pretty long history on women, and it's a fairly sensible name.
Stormy, Vegas, and Random are obnoxious. They scream, "Look how cool I am to name my child something so crazy!" Pretentious and ridiculous. Same with Steve on a girl.
Steven/Stephen on a boy is fine.
Rafael is unusual (depending on your native language) but nice. It's interesting and neat in a way that "Stormy" is not.

Date: 2008-02-01 02:23 am (UTC)IMO, it's one of those names that sounds cool on the surface, but once you think it over, not so great as an actual name. I mean, once the kid's old enough to understand the meaning of the word, they're probably going to think "OH GOD MOMMY DOESN'T WANT ME", not "that sounds rad". Right?

Date: 2008-02-01 02:23 am (UTC)If you're after any practical advice on it, it does have its upsides and I've grown to quite like it, but there are problems too. I still have most of my post addressed to Mr Stephen Doran. And I can never get my bank to talk to me over the phone because they never beleive it's me...

Date: 2008-02-01 02:25 am (UTC)Vegas, Random (wtf?), Stormy = hideous.
Steve is okay as a nickname for Steven, but I prefer it spelled Stephen.

Date: 2008-02-01 02:32 am (UTC)Dana is awesome for girls, would probably not name a boy that though.
Stormy.. no.
Vegas.. no. Anime.. is not that much your friend.
Random? o-o; People seriously name their kid that? Lol.
Steven not for a girl.
Rafael.. maybe. Raphael, though.

Date: 2008-02-01 02:39 am (UTC)Your comment about Vegas = loled, but I am also a little amused that so many people find it that bad! There are plenty of kids named Asia, London, Brooklyn, Dallas, Houston, and my nickname is Reno (admittedly not after the city, but still). I think that at worst, it would just sound like your parents were drunk/thought it was hilarious. Maybe I'm being optimistic with that.
I know, it is more commonly spelt Raphael, but I prefer the spelling with the F.

Date: 2008-02-01 02:45 am (UTC)Dana? Don't particularly like it on either gender, but I prefer it on a girl if anyone.
Stormy? Kind of a depressing word for a name.
Vegas? Nah.
Random? I really hate this on anyone.
Steve? Don't mind a girl named Stevie. Don't mind a guy named Steven. Don't mind this as a nick name for either, but I wouldn't like it as a formal name.
Rafael? I actually kind of like this name, but it's not really my style.

Date: 2008-02-01 03:18 am (UTC)Dana - Horrible on both, more horrible on a boy. This one has gone to the girls.
Stormy - Not bad. Knew a kid named Stormy. Not his real name, but no one ever knew his real name, so it might as well have been.
Vegas - I lived there, so no, personally.
Random - No no no times eleven. It's such a cliche word these days.
Steve - Okay for a guy.
Rafael - Too... Hmmm... How to say it? Too "Latin Lover" for me.

Date: 2008-02-01 03:46 am (UTC)Dana - I prefer it on a guy.
Stormy, Vegas and Random I don't like.
Steve - Sure
Rafael - I like it.

Date: 2008-02-01 06:14 am (UTC)Dana - like it on guys. Dana Carvey for example.
Stormy - Ugh - NO. I kew a girl named Stormy. Trash-o-la.
Vegas - you are kidding right? I would rather name my kid Reno.
Random - No
Steve - girls, no, guys sure
Rafael - Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles!
Side note: I knew a girl named Dana who pronounced it something like Duh-NUH. I knew her for serval years, but no one could ever get her name quite right.

Date: 2008-02-01 02:48 pm (UTC)Dana, I don't like on either sex, although I'd prefer it on a male.
Stormy's cool, but would be tempting fate. I'd only actually use on an animal (same with Vegas).
Random, I don't like on either sex. Steve, as well.
Rafael's a really nice name, though not really my style. I'm surely a product of my generation, in that Raphael makes me think of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle first, the painter second.

Date: 2008-02-01 04:23 pm (UTC)Dana - I like it on a girl; it's unusual but classy. Don't like it on a boy.
Stormy - ugh, no. Sounds like a weather forecaster's nickname.
Vegas - again, ugh. On a related note, I once met a little boy named "Vegas Aidan."
Random - reminds me of the worst book in the Hitchhiker's Guide series. Hate it.
Steve - don't like it on a girl or a guy.
Rafael - ninja turtle! I like "Rafaela" on a girl, though.

Date: 2008-02-03 08:13 pm (UTC)Dana - I like it, but I prefer it spelled Daina, which is the Lithuanian way.
Stormy - I think this is more of a pet's name. Two friends have cats named this!
Vegas - Nah.
Random - Nah.
Steve - I like it, but prefer Stephen or Steven.
Rafael - Eh. It reminds me of Raphael from the Ninja Turtles. Haha.
