Penelope - Okay. Not one I'd use, though.
Eirene - I'm not even sure who to pronounce this one. It looks made up to me.
Rose - Love it.
Chloe - Seems kind of childish to me; I prefer Claire/Clare.
Julian - Love it.
Corey - Okay.

Ruth/Ruthie - Love it.
Pamela - Okay, but not one I'd use.
Wilhemina/Mini - I don't like it at all, but if you do...well, there's nothing wrong with it. I'd spell Mini as Minnie, though. Mini doesn't look like a name, Minnie does.

I like:
Adelle
Aimee
Angelica
Annabel
Anya
Astrid
Audrey
August
Austin
Bess - as a nickname for Elizabeth; it's too nickname-y for a given name.
Blithe - I prefer Blythe.
Brett - Love it on a boy; on a girl, I think it needs to be a nickname for something else, like Elizabeth.
Eleanor
Elsa
Finley - on boys; I've seen this used on girls, and it looks ridiculous.
Fiona
Galen
Genevieve
Harper
Harvey
Hazel
Izzy - as a nickname for Isabel. I don't think it can be a name on its own.
Jesse
Jillian
Josephine - and I like Josie as a nickname for this.
Judith
Karen
Lauren
Lilah
Lorelei
Lucy
Margaret - and I like Maggie as a nickname.
Mira
Molly
Shane (only for boys)
Vivian
Zeke

I notice you have a lot of names of celebrities - was that where you got some of your inspiration, or is that just coincidence?

[identity profile] istytehcrawk.livejournal.com 2008-01-20 09:33 pm (UTC)(link)
Off the top of my head, the ones with the most immediate associations:

Pamela (Anderson)
Cybil (Shepherd)
Fancy (from the Reba song)
Goldie (Hawn)
Izzy (Stephens, character on Grey's Anatomy)
Joaquin (Phoenix)
Jodie (Foster)
Jolene (from the Dolly Parton song)
(John) Lennon
Lorelei (as in the characters on Gilmore Girls, though I think they spell it differently)
Patsy (Cline)
Phoebe (character on Friends)
Prudence (character on Charmed)
Reese (Witherspoon)
Selena (Quintanilla-Perez, the singer)
(Bruce) Willis

There weren't as many as I thought at first, but still several. Of couse, just because *I* make these associations, that doesn't mean *everyone* will. I didn't include ones that tons of people have, like Amanda (Bynes, etc.) because they're not as noticeable/easily associated.

Corey makes me think of that Disney show Corey in the House.

Similiarly:
Angelica = Rugrats
Astrid = Dexter
Anabel = Annabelle's Wish
Aubrey = Master and Commander
Beatrix = Harry Potter
Fox = Fox Mulder from X-Files
Horatio = Horatio Hornblower or CSI: Miami
Locke = LOST
Liberty = Degrassi: TNG
Phoebe and Prudence = both were characters in Charmed; sisters nonetheless

Random associations that some people have with names. None of the ones, you mentioned stuck out to ome (except the Charmed characters, Pamela Anderson, and Goldie Hawn). These one stuck out to me a lot, though.

[identity profile] istytehcrawk.livejournal.com 2008-01-20 10:07 pm (UTC)(link)
I thought of Angelica and Phoebe, but didn't know if Angelica sticking out to me was because of my little sister watching Rugrats all the time, and I already has an association for Phoebe.

Exactly. I just figured I'd point it out, since some people are bothered by associations, especially ones involving celebrities.

Penelope - It's nice though I'd probablly never use it
Eirene - It looks like a creative Irene but I know the history and like it well enough
Rose - Again, nice though I'd never use it
Chloe - Seems a bit kiddish
Julian - I used to like it until I met my Spanish professor =P
Corey - Personally don't like it
Ruth - Nice but my friend Ruth always says it's too old lady like and often times goes by Rufus
Pamela - Not a fan
Wilhemina/Mini - While classical names may be in, I'd never choose Wilhemina... if Mini is a family name, perhaps another name that that nickname goes with could be used; Minerva, for example

Names I like:
Adelle
Alyson
August
Cathleen
Chase
Colleen
Donovan
Drake
Edith
Eleanor
Finley
Fiona
Fox
Horatio
Jason
Jesse
Jillian
Joaquin
Josephine
Karen
Kieran
Locke
Shane
Valerie
Vivian
Vivienne

Random:
Bess - My great-grandmother was named Bessie Norma. She hated Bessie and progressively moved towards using Norma throughout her life until her death when she was buried as Norma.
