I used to think of the name Jaden* as one of those names that you hear all about on the internet, but heaven forbid any *real* people actually use! I haven't met one yet, thank God, but a bit over a year ago, my husband's best friend ended up with a little nephew named Jaden. and then just recently, a friend of my mom's revealed she has a relative (not sure the relation) named Jaden, too!

I know this seems like a silly thing to post about, since, you know, all those internet people who use it are real people somewhere, but still.. I'm not even sure how I'd react to someone intruducing me to their kid if it were named Jaden. it's my #1 most-hated name. I just hope I wouldn't puke on them. but if I did, I suppose I could blame the pregnancy *points at icon* not that I'll have that excuse forever...

*or Jayden, Jaiden, Jadyn, etc...

Seems to be a day for err, unusual names...

Read an article this morning, written by Timandra and now I'm cataloguing a book edited by a man called Cutler J. Cleveland...

Just out of curiosity, I was wondering either:
1. the names of your children
2. the names of your brothers and sisters

I find it interesting to look how groups of names are put together.

Us kids:
Jessica (me)
James
Matthew

Along with younger cousins Lillian (Lily) and Thomas, all five of us have older style names that can be shortened. I think they go together well. Before my cousins were born, Lily and Thomas were the top of my baby name list... as much as I dislike my Aunt for *stealing* my names, I can't imagine having cousins called Daphne and Brody! Plus, I can still use Lily and Thomas as middle names if I want...

One of my favourite teachers from high school and her husband just welcomed their first baby boy, HENDRIX GEORGE (George being the last name, not sure about middle). I know that if it was a girl, she would have been MILLICENT.

I'm not fond of Millicent at all but I think Hendrix is pretty cool. Not sure about how well it will age though?

There's a Russian girl in my class named Marcella. I'm trying to decide if I like it in general or if it only works on her. WDYT?

Tobey Maguire and fiancée Jennifer Meyer have decided on a name for their new bundle of joy, who made her debut on Nov. 10, and no, the Spidey-inspired Mary-Jane didn't make the cut. Us Weekly reports they've dubbed their little girl Ruby, "because they treasure her like a jewel," explains a pal of jewelry designer Meyer, who adds, "And they also just like the name."

Ruby Maguire

I like it!

I've been writing since before I can remember (go go selective memory!) and as such, have made up some very strange character names in my time.

Sometimes the names turn out to be names that are real, or a misspelling of a real name, or deity, or whatever may have you. One even wound up being an angel in old Wiccan mythology or something. Which really boggled my head, but that's not my point.

I know the idea of PURPOSELY misspelling a name for the unique-factor is really frowned down on. What about people who are genuinely artistic/creative, and would feel untrue to themselves to not think of something equally unique for their kids?

I probably would never do this--the idea of one of my kids being named after one of my characters is scary (I tend to put them into morbid/'wrong' situations...) and we're already set on some foreign but still real names anyway. :)

Just looking for opinions, thoughts, insights, whatever.

PS, by original/creative/writer/artist, I'm not talking about your average 14 year old emo kid with their little depressed lyrics or whatever. ;) Nor do I mean the wonder-mamas who name their poor kids after their Paris/Britney/Xtina heroes, with a twist! Leaning more towards published people, someone who's at least had a drawing in a magazine, ah blah. :)
