I was watching "True Life: I'm pregnant" yesterday. The 19 year-old mom-to-be said, "We are naming him Chance, because what are the chances that I would get pregnant?!"

Why not just name your son "Oops"?

i have a friend who gave her daughter a middle name that means "Miracle"-- because she was apparently a miracle. yes, it's a miracle that she didn't conceive sooner! it's not like she had a medical condition or anything, so i don't see how it was such a "miracle" to conceive a child when you're NOT on birth control, having unprotected sex lol.

oh & the child was completely 'normal' & healthy, so no "miracle" as to how she survived or anything.

My sister is named miracle "Milagros" , its a common name among spanish people. I like the name Chance too. But yea, its pretty bad if you come up for a reason like that to be naming ur child.

actually having a 'normal' & 'healthy' baby *IS* a miracle. you'd be astounded at the numbe rof infants/toddlers/children who are born with deformities, or disorders all because of one little thing that happened during the pregnancy.

the mom got a slight cough so she tooka small dosage of over the counter meds, now the baby is born blind.

hell, even if the mother did everything right, if cells don't split just perfectly at just the right time, or one piece of the chromosome doesn't match up just so with another, your child can be born with anything from a cleft lip, to clubbed limbs, to a malformed skull, water on the brain, etc.

so i don't see the problem with a mother being happy with the miracle of life and that her child came out with all 10 fingers, all 10 toes, 2 eyes, 2 ears, 1 nose, a mouth and everything is working order. if they want to name their child Miracle or Milagro/s - i see no problem.

now, as for that "chance" excuse that's dumb. they couldn't come up with something better? like, "we're happy to have this chance to be a family"? or SOMEthing else... yeesh.

very true, but my friend's whole thing was that it was a miracle she got pregnant... which, she's having sex, at a time when she's in the 'fertile' time frame for women, not much of a miracle there.

i mean, just say, "i really like the name Miracle" or variants thereof, not "what a miracle, i wasn't on birth control and after having unprotected sex i got pregnant!"

The girl on the show was supposedly "taking birth control religiously." Even if that is true, naming a child Chance is kind of like naming him Mistake or Accident. I'm sure he will feel great about himself when he hears the story of how he got his name.

Miracle is a bit odd, in my opinion, as a name choice - at least it has a sweet conotation - it gives the impression of being wanted, even if it wasn't quite the long and dangerous road to get there than some have (and there is always the point of view that every baby/child/person is a miracle). I, and particularly my husband, like Mirabelle due to its' similar sound and meaning (which is: wonderful).

Chance, given for that reason, seems close to unkind - almost like 'eh, I tried to limited my chances, but still ended up with you...'. The story behind the name leaves a lot to be desired...

Haha I thought that when I saw the show too. I actually know that girl and have met her a couple times (she's friends with my best friend since 6th grade, the girl out with them on Bourbon). So I knew she had named her son Chance well before the show, but it wasn't until I saw it that I knew why. I totally would have kept that info to myself and not mentioned it on national tv. LoL
