I always think of Punky Brewster too. Even though, according to wikipedia, the original run of the show ended on May 27, 1988...and I was 22 days old. Haha.

It's like a cross between so-LAY and suh-LAY, but it's hard to demonstrate in English.

As for liking it, I don't know... I like it as a word, but not as a name. It seems really weird as a name to me, like the equivalent of actually naming your kid Sun or Sunshine in English.

So-lay... and I love it but I wouldn't name my child Soleil... it would be like calling them 'Sun', and, eh...

I always pronounced it with a french mindeset (blame all those years of learning french.) I know that Cirque du Soleil is pronounced Cirk do So-lie. So...I can only assume that the name would be pronounced So-lie. At least in a french manner.

I like the sound of it - but I wouldn't name my child it. Because of the pronunciation problems that she would have and others would have.

i've never heard anyone pronounce cirque du soleil as cirk do so-lie, always cirk do so-lay. including in my french classes.

so-lay (but...uh, french sounding?)
i like it, but i don't think i'd use it for a first name because so many people would say "so-leel".

Hooray for knowing about things we weren't old enough to remember or alive for!

I say "So-lay," and I like that okay. ;) But I dislike Jerzie in any spelling, sorry. :[

In french it is pronounced either "So-Lay" or "Sew-lay' if you prefer.. the L sound definetely belongs more to the second silable.
Its a lovely name if you dont live somewhere where french is the first language... I love the name Syrene ( or Sirène ) but in french it means mermaid (2nd spelling) and I live in Quebec so I just cant do that to my daughter, even if it is the perfect combination of my husbands mother and grandmothers names and my mothers name. ( Irene, Cecile, and Simone )

I live in Montreal, where The Cirque is from and its definetly pronounced, So-Lay not So-Lie. Sorry

I'm not especially fond of Soleil. It first makes me think of Punky Brewster, than Cirque du Soleil.

I don't really like Jerzie in any variation. It reminds me of cows. If I had ever been to New Jersey and had pleasant memories of it, I'm sure I'd feel differently about it, though.
