Don't like:
Mason - Okay, but kind of trendy and overused.
Edmund - I prefer Edward
Remy - Looks incomplete. Maybe as a nickname? (Please not for Remington, though)
Mendal - Makes me think of "mental." Plus, it sounds like a last name.
Newton - Last name. I can't picture this working as a first name. Maybe as a middle.
Conley - Last name. Plus, 'Con' isn't exactly the connotation you want people to have with a very likely nickname for your son.
Gilon - Not a fan.
The only one of the middle names I don't like is Ever, because it's a word, and people aren't going to be able to get past that (I know I wouldn't; I'd always want to make a joke about "How come your parents didn't name you For?") The rest aren't ones I'd ever use, but that's probably because I'm not Jewish and therefore wouldn't use traditional Hebrew names (Anglicized ones, yes, but not the Hebrew spellings).
Like:
Celia
Mirabelle
Erica
Martha
Naomi
Don't like:
Noreena
Amadea
Astraea
Winifred
Zofia
Irena
Again, all of the middle names are fine:)

i don't think it's fair for me to vote on a lot of the hebrew names because i'm not sure how to pronounce them.

Date: 2008-01-17 10:27 am (UTC)For help with Hebrew names, it helps me to know that Hebrew is a phonetic language, like most romance languages such as Spanish, and vowels have only one possible pronunciation: 'O' is pronounced as 'oh', 'A' is pronounced as 'ah', 'E' is 'eh', "I' is 'ee' and 'U' is 'oo'. The only other real considerations is that 'ch' is as in loch and g is always hard as is good, to my knowledge.

Date: 2008-01-17 08:03 pm (UTC)That said, as far as first names, I like Zachary, Mason, Edmund, Mendal (I'd spell it Mendel though, as in the common Yiddish name), and Ezekiel. Most of the others kind of sound like last names to me.
As for middle names, I think I like all of them...Reuel is awesome, I've never seen it before...I really like Neriah, Yagil, and Elchai. I wouldn't use Liam, because people are going to assume it's short for William and pronounce it wrong. And I prefer Yashuv to Jashub; why Anglicize it when you have all these other Hebrew names?
Now for the girls: I like Celia, Mirabelle, Martha, and Naomi. The others just aren't my style. As for the middle names...I have to comment on all of these because I love Hebrew girls' names.
Bithiah: I'd spell/pronounce this Bitya or Batya. Bithiah just screams "Anglicized" to me.
Emuna: beautiful name, beautiful meaning.
Serach: This is on my list of middle names too! Do you know the midrash on the biblical Serach? (Ignore that if you have no idea what I'm talking about; I'm assuming, because you seem to know Hebrew based on your above comment.)
Meira: Love. One of my favorites.
Shifra: Not a fan, though I'm not sure why I don't like it.
Zerizah: Never heard of this one, not even sure what it means....
Eliora: Another of my favorites.
Elinoa: Don't think I've ever heard it, but I like it a lot.
Ashera: Never heard this one either, and I think I prefer Ashira, but Ashera's nice.

Date: 2008-01-18 10:50 am (UTC)Reuel is one of my absolute favorites! Geek note: It's the third R is JRR Tolkien's name which he also gave to his sons. I loved it before I found that out, but it amuses me greatly :)
And yay for someone else knowing Serach bat Asher! I've had to explain *soo* many times that it isn't a crazy kr8tyve version of Sarah. I really want to pair it with Celia (meaning heavenly) as a nod to her, as well as the wonderful conotation of 'heavenly abundance' when paired together :)
