So...we're having trouble deciding on a name for our little girl. We've narrowed it down a little...my husband likes Harper a little better and I like Abigail (Abbie) a little better. However, today I thought we could name her Ruby, after my grandma (who died the week she was conceived). In any case the middle name will be Elizabeth, which is also a family name. My son's name is Jackson Elliot and we call him Jack. So a couple of questions:

Is this weird or morbid? I know it's fairly common to use family names, but my grandma *just* died in August. Is the name appropriate for a teenager or young woman? I can certainly see a little girl being called Ruby, and also an older woman. Does it fit well with Jack as a sibset?

I think it goes well. It's a cute, classic name. Even though your grandmother died recently, a few months have passed and I think it would be a lovely tribute to her.

I was sold on Harper (it's my current favorite) until you mentioned about your grandma. Plus Jack & Ruby sound great together.

I voted for Harper, but after reading your entry, I'm changing it to Ruby. I think it's an appropriate name for both child and adult, when she grows up, and it goes well with Jack(son). It's also very sweet that you're considering naming your daughter after your grandmother, especially since she was conceived the week your grandmother died. If you believe in reincarnation, that's how I think of it.

I love the name Ruby and it's nice that it has meaning to you. I don't think it's too soon to use it and Ruby Elizabeth sounds lovely. ALl the names are great though, so you can't go wrong.

I love Ruby, and I don't think it's morbid.

All three names are great, but Abigail is very very very popular, so I'd go with either Harper or Ruby. Of the two, I like Ruby better.

I love all those names! But I chose Harper as my fave. But I think it would be lovely to name your daughter after your grandmother, it will be fine no matter what and Jack and Ruby would be an ADORABLE sibset!

But I do still like Harper slightly more. =/

Ruby is really popular here in England, it fits all ages..my best friend it Ruby in her 20's & I know baby Ruby.

It's ranked 2 in England & Jack is ranked 1 so yes, there must be a fair few Ruby & Jack sibsets out there.

It's not exessively popular in the US though- 138, whilst Abigail is 6 (not counting it's 4 other variants in the top 1000)

Harper is androdgenous & rather a trendy literary name.

I'd go for Ruby Elizabeth definitely.

I love Ruby Elizabeth. I can definitely picture it on a teenager since I know a 16 year old named Ruby and the name suits her well. I think it would be a nice tribute to your grandmother if you named her after her.

I really dislike the name Ruby. There is no reason for it, I've just always hated it. I love both Abigail and Harper though. Abigail would be my choice.

I adore Ruby & Harper equally, but the meaning behind the former puts it just ahead. Not morbid at all.
It sounds great for all ages. :)

Finally someone who agrees with me! I can't stand Ruby and I don't know why either, I guess it's just one of those names.

I voted for Abigail, but Ruby's very nice as well. I like Harper, too, but somewhat less than the other two. Ruby and Abbie fit better with Jack, in my opinion.

I really, really love the name Harper, so I voted for that one, but I'm not sure how much I like it paired with Elizabeth.

Jack Ruby. Guy who killed Lee Harvey Oswald. Probably not the best idea, although both names are nice.
