[identity profile] sex.livejournal.com posting in [community profile] babynames

I'm finding out the sex of our baby in a month, so we've been sort of looking more into baby names as of lately. We want something that's not too trendy, but too out there that our kid is gonna hate us in 10 years. :P Middle name will stay the same, as it is personal. (Jordin for a girl, Jordan for a boy)

For a girl I'm in love with Avery, but I'm a little afraid it's become trendy/popular as of lately?

And for a boy, my boyfriend is set on Quinton or Elijah. I think Elijah has also become very popular lately. And I think I might like "Quentin" better than "Quinton". What do you think?!

I agree with this. The percentages are better to look at on the SSA than the rankings. After you get out of the top 20, they go WAY down.

And frankly it's not that bad having someone in your classroom with the same name. You adjust.

I think Elijah is getting popular but I still think it's a fabulous name and I like it better than Quentin/Quinton
Same with Avery, I think it's a great name

On the same note, I don't like Quitin/Quentin Jordan much, because of the similar endings.

Stick with Avery! And I agree that Quentin is better than Quinton.

Also, I understand if this is non-negotiable, but I think the spelling of Jordan works for either a girl or boy. Jordin looks a little misspelled to me but if you have your heart set on it, leave it.

Avery is trendy and kind of blah. I guess it's just the fact that it seems like one of those names that only started to be used on girls because it sounded slightly feminine. But yeah, it's at 52 right now, and it's been going up by ten or twenty points every year.

I definitely like Elijah the best as far as the boy names go.

With Jordin as a middle name for a girl (I'd suggest going with Jordan as the spelling regardless of gender; Jordin looks like a typo and Jordan is popular on both sexes), I'd go with something more feminine as a first name so that she doesn't have two unisex/masculine names. If you're really set on using something unisex for a girl, how about something like Josephine, Charlotte, etc. that have masculine nicknames like Joey or Charlie. Then she can go by the masculine one if she wants, but has a more feminine name to fall back on? Avery is very trendy, as are most of the unisex names like Taylor, Bailey, etc. There are a TON of girls being born that are given unisex names, so if you don't want something trendy, I'd stay away from those.

I absolutely love Elijah, and despite being popular, it's not trendy, it's merely a classic name that's going to be popular regardless of the time period. Quinten would be the way I spelled it, but I don't think either spelling actually looks 'wrong.'

I like Avery a lot, it's on my list.
Elijah is better sounding than Quentin, it reminds me of Tarantino.

Personally I can't stand the name Avery for a girl, because I've associated it with a traditional Tex/Western male's name since I was a kid. I know it sounds similar to Ava, which is very popular and that's probably why it became common for girl's, but to me it would be like naming a little girl Hickory. However, I do seem to be in the minority, but that's just my association with it.
I think Elijah and Quintin/Quentin (I prefer it with an 'e' also) are both good names for boys, though. It may also be an added bonus that they can both be shortened to nice nicknames!

Avery is mine & my husband's favorite girl name.

However, I posted on here before about it in the past and people were commenting that it was a boy's name. I know it can be a unisex name, but I personally see it as a [very lovely] girl's name!

I think you should stick with Avery.

I love all the boys names...but I think I prefer Quinton over Quentin. Elijah is my favourite though.

Quentin/Quintin is a great name. Elijah, too, but you're right... it's becoming increasingly popular.

Avery I don't see being trendy or popular, but I'm not too keen on having it on a girl. It's very boyish.

Avery Jordin sounds very nice, but avery is very popular (where I live anyways) And I love both Quinton and Elijah. Maybe Quinton a little more, because I like the nickname Quinn

While there's something very appealing about Avery on a girl to me, Avery Jordin could lead to some gender confusion, as they're both unisex names. And I suppose Avery for females is becoming a little trendy.

I like Elijah okay, and Quinton even more. Quentin is a favorite of mine. I definitely prefer that spelling.

I love Avery for a boy or a girl. I don't like Jordin spelled like that and I don't like Quinton at all. I like Elijah. Isaiah is close to Elijah, if that tickles your fancy at all. I wouldn't worry about any names out of the first 15-20 on the list. It was 73 last year, by Carly and Amber and I don't consider those super trendy popular names.
