hello! i'm new here. i'm michelle, 29 and hopefully pregnant right now!

i still have to wait a bit to find out for sure, but in the meantime i can hope :P

so, here's my long list of possible baby names. please vote on what ones you like.

feel free to comment or give first and middle name combos, i have trouble with choosing middle names.

also, my late mothers name was cynthia jo so i'd like to possibly incorporate one of those names into either the first or middle girls name.

thanks!

VOTE on my Name List

I really love some of your names, but others aren't so great, so I'm just going to make a few suggestions and give a few a huge thumbs up.

There are a couple that, while "cute," wouldn't grow up so well with the kid, so I'd try to stay away from ones that are more nicknames than actual names, like Gracie, Maisie, and Elle. These are all fine names - as nicknames - but I'd stick to Grace and call her Gracie, and use Maisie and Elle as nicknames for more sophisticated names like Margaret and Eleanor.

Also, unisex names are SO trendy right now, and if you name your kid Bailey, Avery, or Ryan (which is a boy's name, not unisex), s/he is going to be one of about 8 million other kids with the same name. Plus, unisex names can cause issues when the kid is older. As a girl with short hair, I'm going tell you that I would HATE having a unisex name, because everyone would assume that I was a boy. Luckily my name (although originally a boy's name) is quite popular on girls of my age, so people know I'm a girl, but if my name was Avery or Bailey, or worse yet, a boy's name like Ryan, I would get annoyed with it, quick. It's much easier on the kid if they don't have a gender neutral name. If they want to break down gender barriers, that's fine, but don't force it on them, because they're probably going to hate the idea of it just on principle. If you like the idea of using a more masculine name on a girl, I'd suggest using a feminine formal name that has a boy's name as a nickname: Josephine/Jo, Charlotte/Charlie, Harriet/Harry, etc.

On the trendy note, Addison, Abigail, Mckenna, and Isabella are horrendously popular and are the victims of an insane number of butcherings when it comes to spelling; your daughter would inevitably be one of eighteen in her class and would constantly have to spell her name, even though it's spelled correctly (except Mckenna, which has no 'correct' spelling).

I'd also recommend staying away from ones that aren't actually names, because everyone is going to make a 'WTF?' face when they see it: Ever, Aislin, Seren, Meena, Astin, Farren, Ryland, and Aberly seriously look made-up (except Ever, which is just...not a name. I can think of the jokes right now...) - regardless of whether or not they're a legit name in _____, a kid growing up in the US is going to have an issue with these names at some point in their life, and with so many great ones on your list, I'd say stay away from these ones unless you are horribly attached to them.

Lastly, place-names and last names as names for girls are a huge trend right now, and again, it doesn't really fit well on an adult. I have a difficult time picturing an adult named Kinsey or London and actually having them be able to pull it off. It just doesn't pass the 'business card test,' as they say. So I'd recommend against using Kinsey, London, Reagan (plus, who wants the awful Ronald Reagan connotations with their daughter's name? hahaha), Kennedy, Ireland, London, and Sibley (it sounds like a last name, and it sounds too much like 'sibling').

I'd also stay away from Kaden if at all possible, as the name Kayden/Caden/Kaden is so popular, and is so close to the Aidan/Brayden/Jayden trend.

That said, you have some absolutely wonderful names on your list. My favorites are:
Simon
Sawyer
Ryan (for boys only; this name is awful on girls)
Oliver
James
Michael

Analiese
Elise
Isabel (spelled this way; the others are quite popular)
Madeleine
Grace
Piper

I also love the name Josephine, with Jo as a nickname, which could help with having your mom's name somewhere in it.

I'd recommend Sawyer or Simon as the boy's name and either Analiese or Madeleine as the girl's name. They're nice names that aren't horribly popular (although Sawyer has the potential to be) and that aren't going to forever date your child or make him/her seem like they're a little kid when they're really forty.

Also, another spelling of the name Analiese is Annelise, and Elise could be used as a nickname, so you could alternate between the two if you like them both a lot.

I basically agree with everything you said, except that I hate Sawyer and Piper. Piper especially is way too cutesy. I can't imagine it on anyone over five years old.

Yeah, I actually like the sound of Piper, and I think it could work fine as a nickname for something, just not as a name on its own. :)

It seems like most of your girl's list is very feminine and there were only a few that didn't seem like they fit in, like Darby and Bailey for example, but other than that I think they're very nice names. And I actually think Ever sounds kind of nice. It's not something that I would use, but as far as "unique word-names" goes, it actually has a nice sound instead of just a nice thought associated with it. Maybe a middle name?
And I disagree with the earlier poster about Aislin... it's not a made up name - it's Irish, I've heard it before and I know someone in her early 20s with that name. She deals with mispronunciations sometimes but I definitely don't think its a "WTF" name. I also think "Jo" sounds cute with a lot of names, one of my favorites is Amy Jo.

I really like Cynthia Luella!!

Other than that, you have quite a lot of made-up-ish, trendy names, sorry :/
I think some are really bad, like Canon and Kincaid.

Sibley is the deadly one among your girl's names :P

Cindy Lou is really, really pretty!!
I don't see anything specific in it that would make her get teased because of it :)

it's really unique and tasteful combination!

It's a reference to Dr. Suess, a children's author.

Simon is my top boy's name so of course I love that one.
I also really liked Duncan James, Oliver, Parker and Brighton (my brother's name).
I like Oliver Joe or Oliver Joseph (it could be a tribute to your mother).

For the gils I like: Abigail, Addison, Analiese, Madeleine and Piper.
suggestions:
Abigail Cynthia
Addison Jo
Madeleine Jo

Johanna is a pretty name too.
And it's a strange coincidence that a friend of my mother is called Jocynthia.

Sometimes you don't have to decide! For example, one of my favourite names is Eloise, which is generally considered pretty classic, but it's not even in the top 1000. Obviously I'm not saying you have to use Eloise, but there are a lot of classic sort of names that aren't popular at all. Examples:

Eloise (not in top 1000)
Camilla (825)
Rosalie (not in top 1000)
Adela (not in top 1000)
Susanna (not in top 1000)
Edmund (not in top 1000)
Rhys (914)
Matthias (810)
Adrien (754)

Those are just some that I like. They might not be at all to your taste, but it is possible to find names that aren't trendy or 'yooneek' sounding, but still very uncommon. :)
