[identity profile] chucklincanuck.livejournal.com posting in [community profile] babynames

Although having a child is not even in my 5-year plan, I already feel as though I should start looking for names....lol! My fiance is Albanian (from Kosovo), and we have already decided that our children should have proper Albanian names. His name is Bashkim (pronounced Bah-shkim), and the names of his family members are:
Naim...pronounced Nye-im
Xhevat...pronounced Jah-vat
Xhezeeta....pronounced Ja-zee-tah
Luljeta...pronounced Loo-lee-yet-ah
Bukurie...pronounced Boo-koo-ree-ah
Naybi (rhymes with 'maybe')

I can't really say I like any of them! Please check out this website for more names, and tell me which ones you like!

(Bytheway, there are not 20000 Albanian names listed! The site has 20000 names altogether!)

My favorites were Ariana and Pjeter. On my first run through, I assumed you were in Canada becuase of your screenname, so I was trying to find names that I thought would be easy on English-speaking Canadian tongues (and now I realize that was a stupid assumption anyway, as you might speak French more often than English), but upon checking your profile, I suppose that isn't really a factor. I looked again and those were still the two that stuck out for me. Just curious, with all factors considered, if you were to have a child in your present situation, what do you think his or her primary language would be?

I somewhat grew up with an Albanian family; the girls' names I remember are Barda and Mila (short for Fatmila). Their cousin (also female) was nicknamed Dita, although I can't remember what the full name was.

I love Elira (f) & Skender (m)
From the boy's names, I also kind of like Fitore, Eduart (although I prefer it being spelled with a 'd' at the end) and Lorenc.

Boy:
Arian (although there is the "aryan" connotation)
Enver
Erion
Leotrim
Lorenc
Pjeter (I would probably change the spelling to Pieter--the sound would be the same *in English, unfortunately not in German! ;)* and there seems to be a good amount of i/j alternatives like Erion/Erjon on the list anyway)
+ the site lists "Leka" as a pet form of Alexander--another site tells me Aleksander would be the full form in Albania, so Aleksander, nn Leka

Girl:
Ardiana
Ariana
Donieta
Elira
Era
Rovena (if pronounced the same, I would anglicize the spelling to Rowena)

From http://gaminggeeks.org/Resources/KateMonk/Europe-Eastern/Albania/index.htm, I found: (taking with a grain of salt, as they may or may not actually be Albanian in any way! :) )

Girl:
Lena
Mira
Silvana
Margarita
Rina

Boy: (leaving out the common English ones like Adam and Robert)
Anton
Devis
Tritan (although close to Triton - mythological/Disney figure)
