[identity profile] gsi07816.livejournal.com posting in [community profile] babynames
Two weeks ago or so, my husband and I found out that we're having a girl in May. A few days before, I realized that I liked the name Emily. I shared that with him and he mentioned that he really likes the combination Emily Anne, since Ann or Anne is his mother's middle name. Now, the problem: after researching the name Emily, I discovered that it's extremely popular these days and I always figured I would give my child a name that wasn't in the top 20 on the SSA's website. Today, I was researching alternatives to the name Emily that are similar, yet different enough for my taste. I came up with the name Emmelyn (pronounced Emma-Lynn) Anne or Emmalyn Anne. I don't like Emmaline (pronounced Emma-Leen) or Emaline pronounced (Emma-Line). Does anyone have any other suggestions or opinions on Emmelyn/Emmalyn? Thanks in advance for your help.

My friend has a daughter, we call her Emma, but her name is Emmanuella. You could maybe get away with a name like Emmanuelle Anne

I was (almost) in the same boat as you. We were expecting twins and did not know the gender. (They were both boys, now 6 weeks old). For a girl, I loved the name Emily, but also did not like the popularity. My search for something similar but different landed me on the name:

Amelia

Amelia Anne, admitedly, does not carry that same great ring as Emily Anne. Our name, for a possible future daughter, is Amelia Jean.

Good luck, and congratulations!

When I did work experience at my old kindergarten, there was a little girl called Emma-Lee (pronounced like Emily).. I quite liked how her named was spelt... or maybe I just liked watched her write her name out on paper, becuase it was different.

I hate the Emma-Lee combination; it's even worse than Brooke Lynn.

Emmelyn/Emmalyn looks made up to me, and it just seems like two names combined; plus, it looks like you're trying to hard to be unique with it (no offense, I know that's a huge concern for a lot of people). The only problem with using a name like Emmelyn is that she will most likely be called Emma as a nickname, whether you want her to or not. Everyone she meets will probably call her Emma, and it's still the #2 name on the SSA list.

I love Emily, and despite it's popularity, it's still a wonderful, classic name. I don't particularly like the flow of Emily Anne, but I think it's okay and it's great that it has meaning for you.

I think, if you love the name Emily, you should use it. If popularity means a lot to you, what about Amelia or Amelie? They're sort of similar in style to Emily, but not in the top 10.

If popularity means enough to you that you don't want to use Emily, I'd stay away from the Emmaline/Emelyn, etc. because she's likely to end up being called Emma anyway, and that's close enough to Emily and still the #2 name. And if it doesn't bother you that much, use Emily anyway. It's a fantastic name, and I think I speak for everyone when I say that it's much better to use a popular, yet classic name like Emily than a less popular, but totally whacked out name.

I don't really like Emmalyn. It seems kind of...creative/made up to me. And even though it's not exactly popular, it kind of has the same ring as really trendy names these days.

I agree with the Amelia comment. I love the name and it's classic without being overly common.

Also similar: Amelie, Emery, Mila, Ellie, Emelina, Emme, Esme.

Oh, and congratulations on your baby girl!

I second the suggestions of Amelia or Amelie. There's also Emilia, which is pronounced just like Amelia.

Amelia
Analie
Amelie

If you like Emily Anne, stick with it. It's a nice name. You can use Emma as a nickname or Milly or call her Annie. Or maybe find another name you like and use Emily as a middle name. Or find an Anne type name. Like Annelise Emily ____. Something like that.

I love the name Emily a lot as well, too bad it's so popular. Emily Anne sounds really good though! I'd say just go for it =)
The only other suggestions I can think of are Emlyn & Emilia.

I know a little girl named Emiliana (it's Italian) which would seem to combine both the names you and your husband like.

I would stick with Emily... despite it's popularity it's such a beautiful name!

Emily's my top girl name, my favorite combination being Emily Jane. Shame about the popularity, but I honestly thing I'd still use it. I can understand not wanting to, though.

Amelia was the first alternative to come to mind, and Amelie is a nice variation on that, as well. I've also always had a soft spot for Amalia, a Spanish variation.

Playing around at thinkbabynames.com, I also came across Emelita (that looks very Hispanic to me, but maybe that's not an issue for you), Mali, Amalida, and Amala.

I'd honestly still use Emily. Yes, it's popular, but it's not trendy. It's a nice, classic name that should be used. It's no Caiden. ;)

Emmalyn (or however it's spelled) looks made-up and she'll be called Emma anyway so you may as well name her that. or if you like the sound, you could go with Evelyn which is also popular but not as much as Emily. or you could go with Emily because you like classic names and she'll just share her name with a lot of kids.

I like Emmalyn, but it does look made up - what about Emmy or Ember?

With the whole -lyn name trend, I don't think Emmelyn would be much better in terms of popularity.
