[identity profile] tryyingtoevolve.livejournal.com posting in [community profile] babynames
I was having a conversation with my mom earlier about baby names, and the names I liked when I was a little kid. I've always had a love/hate relationship with my name (Lindsay Rebecca), so when I was about six, and again at fourteen, I tried to convince my mom to let me change it. When I was six, I wanted to be Jasmine, like from Aladdin, and when I was fourteen, I wanted to change it to Tallulah, like the character in Divine Secrets of the Ya Ya Sisterhood.

Thankfully, as my mother and I both agreed, I outgrew both of those stages several years ago, and I've come to accept that while my name isn't the best, I do like it, and it does fit me.

Currently my two favorite names for girls are Harriet and Louisa; I made the mistake of telling my mom this, and now she keeps making comments about the names (mostly Harriet, although she hates Louisa, too). Now, pleasing my mom isn't exactly high on my list of priorities and if she hates the name, I don't really care. I won't be having kids for a while anyway, and maybe she'll either learn to love the names or I'll change my mind before I do. But I was just wondering...

Did any of you have family members totally cringe when they heard the names you wanted to use? Did you use it anyway? Have they grown to accept it, or do they still make comments even after the baby is born?

Also, what crazy, off the wall names did you like when you were a child that you laugh about now?

my son's father's mother HATED every name that i picked out at first. the ones she especially hated: Brooks, Kerry, & Bryan. she had something to say about every single effing name. she was the only person who really gave suggestions, though. my stepmother gave one suggestion: Riley. i really loved it, but my ex & his mother hated it.

so i didn't tell her or any of my family what names i picked out after we definitely found out it was a boy. no one knew what we were naming him until after he was born.

when i was younger, my one doll was named Elliot. my cabbage patch dolls were Mimi & Brianna. when i picked out names for future children, the ones i can recall were Brynn & Bree, both of which i still like lol.

Not really a problem with family members, since we didn't pick a name until after the baby was born, and never got a single negative comment on it.

I can totally understand the love/hate relationship you have with Lindsay. I have it with Lindsey. I don't really like much about it, but better or worse, it's me.

I wanted my name to be Sonya, from that game Mortal Combat when I was in 2nd grade. I called myself that for a really long time. And my friends all had names from that as well, we were super cool. ahahah. And when the power rangers were the IT thing, I wanted my name to be Kimberly.

BUT;; the best thing, and its on film, was when I was at a pumpkin patch around 2-3 years old, my grandma asked what my name was and I told her Bob. LMAO. I was a cute child. And no one knows why I called myself that.

And to add to what you actually posted about, it seems like EVERY SINGLE NAME I suggest to my mom/grandma is turned down flat. They hate all the names that I love! It's super annoying cause I know that they will influence my decision in the end. =[.

When I was about 8 I decided if I ever had twin girls their names would be Wing and Dove. And also I wanted triplets, 2 girls and a boy, named Blair, Blanche, and Blake.
Lol, now I like Blake for a girl and I still like Blanche. Not Blair or Wing or Dove. yuck.

My mother's used to hate every name I've ever wanted to call a child. I used to pick out a lot of German names or weird names off TV/Movies, Eg. Gumby, Possum, Alvin, Theodore, Simon, Pokey XD Now she likes some of the names I think of, as I've settled down on picking out ridiculous names and have settled for some more normal or older names.

As a kid I loved the names Mario and Luigi (yes I was that sad and pathetic as a kid). Though I was only ever allowed to give those names to my pet roosters.

I told my mom, aunt, and grandmother that I love the name Isabella, but they all flipped and told me what a horrible name it is. I love it, though, and I'll totally use if if I still like it in ten years.

I remember, when I was maybe five or so, I wanted to name my first daughter Olympia. Nothing else was quite as out-there as that, at least to my knowledge; in elementary school, my favorite names were Erica, Kimberly (because of the Pink Ranger), and Serena (because of Sailor Moon). In middle school, I went through a whole cr8yv phase, and my favorites were Alyson, Lyndsie, Lauryn, Ashleigh, and Leighanne. Rachel was my favorite for a while, too, though I didn't butcher that spelling. Also, Brianna Claire was my favorite combo in fifth grade... I still think that one's nice. :)

Anything flouncy

Anastasia (ahnastayzia or some similar monstrocity)
Alicia
Felicity
Gabriella
Marissa
Annabel
Anabelle

I went through a stage of Adele, Elodie, and Eleni. I thought they were the greatest names ever.. and I used to want my children to have names that started with the same letter.

I still adore Anabelle/Annabel and Felicity..got it from Mallory Towers books I think.

My mum just thinks it's weird that I'm so obsessed with names..

Oh, and boys names.. I remember being in love with the names Lewis & Jett.
(I still love Jett)

Didn't care for the male names so much. In my childhood daydreams I never had boys.. and the father was Nick from Backstreet Boys..

I used to want to be named Stephanie so much. Now I dislike the name, and it doesn't fit me at all. I also wanted to change my middle name to Jade.

My boyfriend hates the name I want to use for a baby girl, Adeline, and I hate the name he wants to use for a boy, Johann Philip, so we're in for an argument when we decide to have kids. :)

Oh, yeah. I'm still techinically a child (16) and I'm one of those who does think of boy names, but I'm dreaming of all girls.

When I was a kid, I wanted to name a future child 'Maple'. When I told my mum, she looked at me like I was insane and said, "Like the tree?" I also liked Harmony, and Ruby. I think my favourite names as a child were Beth and Rose, though - pretty tame.

I went through a phase where I pretended my name was Victoria, when the Spice Girls were at their most popular. It's still one of my favourite names, not just because of that though hehehe. Pretty much all of my favourite names have at least one person associated with them that I like and admire, but of course I also have to love the name as well.

I also remember my very favourite name when I was about five being Sally ... I have no idea why, I can't think of any book or movie or anything with a character named that that I liked back then. I still kind of like the name, but I would never never use it.

My grandmother hates my name, and has hated it, usually without comment but occasionally vocally, for 21 years. She refers to me almost exclusively as "Ellie", because she thinks Eleanor is ugly (well, your name is Gertrude, so I don't know if you're the one to judge, Granny).

My other grandma (Grace Eleanor) obviously loved my name and talked about how beautiful it was a lot. She had a daughter named Eleanor, but that Eleanor changed her name to Pearl, so my grandma was excited that I at least liked the name.

My mother said, when my son was a month old (first time we spoke after he was born - she's 3000 miles away) that my son would be beaten up at school because of his middle names. She also ruined the name Louisa for me by saying if I called my daughter that, she would call her Lou-Lou.

As my mother named all her children the same letter, and the fact two of us don't go by our first names anymore, I really wish she wouldn't give name advice - but throughout both pregnancies (I'm the only one of my siblings with children) she hounded my about it, and I've done my own thing anyway.

I was talking to my brother about this a few weeks ago. Apparently, he absolutely hates the kind of names I like (Maeve, April, Otis, Roman).
Oh well. He has never said anything about it since (obviously, he's not a name obsessed person like me) ;)

When I was very little I loved the name Jennifer, for some reason, which I now dislike a LOT.
When I was about 10, I was very fond of the name Liselore, thanks to a book I was reading.
Then, when I was about 12, I loved the names Ole (boy's name, I'm not in an English speaking country! =P) and Florens. I still like those names, although I prefer the spelling Florence now.

I do have a son named Harvey, they'd shut up and get over it after one minute of knowing him

You think. My husband has a cousin name Wyatt and his family is still talking about what an odd name that is and the kid is nearly nineteen!

I wish I could remember the names I loved as a child. I remember that I named my Cabbage Patch Kid Victoria when I was four or five, and for years that was my favorite name. It's still on my list, though, so I guess that doesn't count.

My mom asked me once...let's see, six years ago now...what I'd name a child if I had one. I told her I leaned toward classic names. She asked for an example, and I said Isabel. She made a face. "You don't like Isabel?" I asked.

"It sounds like an old person. I think I had a resident with that name once," she replied (she works at a nursing home). I can only imagine what she must think of all the little Avas, Abigails, and Emmas out there.

I used to love the name Tallulah but I kind of grew out of that stage. My taste in names haven't changed much but my actual favorites have. My current favorite girl name is Rowan (for a girl) and my mom and my sister think it's so ugly. They're like isn't that a boy's name? Ugh whatever it'll have to grow on them I guess.

When I was about 8, I wanted to be Nichole. I'm not sure why; I just thought it was cooler than Elizabeth. I didn't even have any friends named Nichole at that age.

We've been telling friends and family, thus far, that it'll be Ponyboy Lucifer if it's a boy, and Rainbow Jezebel if it's a girl. Most catch on immediately that we're joking, but my husband's aunt flipped out at us for like five minutes on Christmas while we (Hubby and I, two more aunts, and a cousin) all tried to explain that it's a joke and we didn't have any names chosen yet. It was annoying and cute all at once.

Note: The fact that I always jokingly defend Ponyboy for a few minutes (hey, it's a literary name!) probably didn't help.

All my family, and my boyfriend, hate all the names I like! My mum is actually the one who likes the most!
At one point in my childhoos I decided I was going to have identical twin girls and call the Jasmine and Emily I think. I ended up calling my teddy Jasmine instead!

When I was a kid I liked Sadie Rose and Grace Shenandoah!

I really want to have a daughter named Anne but to nickname her Hannah. Everyone thinks that's really insane.
