What do you think of the name Ryan for a girl?

I really like more masculine/unisex names for girls. I also like James/Jamie. What are some of your fav masculine girls names?

I like it if it's balanced with a more feminine middle name, like Ryan Angela (first thing that popped in my head).

I'm currently really liking the name Channing for a girl.

i actually don't mind boys names on girls. Ryan is my son's name, & the only reason i prefer it on a boy is because it means "Little king." some boys/unisex names that don't have such masculine meanings, i don't mind much for girls.

unisex names i don't mind: Cameron, Avery, Terry/Teri, Dana, Blake, Blair, Angel, Ashley, Ashton, Brice, Bailey, Cassidy, Jayden/Jaden, Casey/Kasey, Francis/Frances, Hayden, Jordan, Kelly, Kerry/Carrie, Kendall, Kennedy, Lane/Layne.

I kind of like Ryan, Jamie and Dylan. I really like Frankie, Sid (nn from Sidney), Riley.

My daughter is Riley. I like Avery for girls as well. Jamie is okay for a girl (I prefer it on boys though, I think). I LIKE Ryan for a girl, but I knew an aweful girl named Ryan, so it's unuseable for me lol

I like unisex names on girls, some masculine names even, unless they are really really masculine. Like, let's say, Jack or Adam. Don't ask me where I draw the line, because I don't know exactly ;)
I'm not really a fan of Ryan though.

I love Aubrey and Elliot on girls.
Sometimes I like more feminine sounding names on boys as well, like Francis and Dominic =).

Omg please don't.

Imagine the teasing.

Yeah I know they are boy's names, which is why I said 'feminine sounding names on boys. Because personally, I've only met one male Dominic and only females called Francis.

I definitely don't like originally female names on boys. Unlike girls with (slightly) masculine names, boys with girl names will be bullied. A lot. I think because it's ok for a girl to be 'tough', but it's not really ok for a boy to be feminine. In society, at least.

Yeah, I totally agree with you. Unfortunately, it isn't that simple. It's easy to say 'society should quit being sexist', but it just doesn't work that way.
I'm sure that if I were to meet a guy called Lisa, I would get over it too. I think he is just lucky he wasn't teased. Especially middle school children can be quite cruel.

& To me they sound feminine because I've only met females with those names.

I'd think "Wow, that girl has a boy's name."

I don't really like masculine names on girls, but I'm a girly-girl, so that may be why. Ryan, to me, is a boy's name, so I really don't like it on girls, or any boy's names on girls - I really like Ryan for a boy, and I'd hate for it to become a girl's name and not be able to use it for a boy.

That being said, about the most masculine names that I like for girls are Addison, Harper, and Morgan. I've never known any males with those names, though, so I think of them as being female. None of them I'd ever use as a first name, I don't think.

Ryan is so popular as a boys' name that I think it would be silly to put it on a girl.

I don't particularly like masculine names on girls, though.

I hate unisex names on girls, and James sounds RIDICULOUS on a girl. Just Jamie would be tolerable, but James is definitely definitely definitely a boy's name. Ryan is awful, too, but more acceptable.

The only unisex names I like on girls are Ashley and Taylor. Jordan is okay, too, but I don't particularly like it on either sex.

Since we're on the topic, what is it with giving girls masculine names? I've heard people say that it's because they want their daughters to sound "strong." As a feminist, I find this practice really...sexist. It's equating femininity with weakness and saying that a girl has to be masculine to be strong. Who's to say that an Elizabeth or Catherine can't be strong, too?

That's really interesting. I consider myself a feminist as well, but I do like some masculine names on girls. I just like it when a name sounds kind of 'tough'. That doesn't mean I equate femininity with weakness though. It hasn't even crossed my mind!

Yeah, exactly!
If I were to name my daughter Aubrey, or whatever, I am not trying to prove a point about gender. I just like that name on girls!

Haha, I actually don't mind unisex names on boys! I like Morgan, Casey, etc. on boys, but not on girls.

I generally just like boy's names on girls and girl's names on boys. I shouldn't use my kids to prove a point about gender, you know? If they want to break down gender barriers, that's fine, but I feel like my kids are already going to have enough to deal with in that department with their two moms without the help;)

Christian as a female name was one of the most popular names in England, and rising in popularity in the 17th century.

It was in the top 50 names in the 16th century as well.

This is a source from 13th century Northumberland, in which Christian was the third most popular girl's name.

I hate when people try to take boys names and make them girls. 2 of my future 3 sons will have to deal with this (Aubrey and Kaelin) and I just despise that! Ryan is a boys name, don't like.. all well.. it's still a boys name and it means Little King for heavens sake!

Regardless, I hate Ryan on a girl.

Ryan and James [especially James] are most definately male names.
I also hate names such as Cameron, Ashley, Eliott and Dylan on girls.

I think Ryan is cute, although I wouldn't think of it as a girl's name immediately.

My daughter's name is Avery, so obviously I like that. I also like Jordan, Harper, and Ellis for a girl. If I were pregnant with a girl now, I would definitely be leaning toward Harper.

Some of my favorite girls' names are unisex.
Blair, Casey (though I'm starting to like it better spelled Kaycie), Channing, Kelly, Morgan, Riley, Skyler, Taylor, Blake, Ashley, Frances.

I think they're cute as nicknames, but I wouldn't use one for a given name. (Charlie for Charlotte, Joey for any of the names with Jo in them, and so on.) Conversely, having a sort of long unisex/boy name on a girl with a girly nickname is alright IMO.

Well, given that I like Jayne on a boy (but I spell it Jain simply because I went to school with a Jayne and we had a teacher who insisted it was pn Jay-nee, Yay Firefly!) and Joshua on a girl....and that I spent most of hs wishing my name was James....I'm not going to bash anyone:) Kisten is also one of my favorite boy names.

Anyway, as far as butch names on little girl babies, I like Harper, Morrow, Harker, James, Gray, Joshua, Harley, Marley, Harlow, Emersen, Asher, Darwin, Cian, Jude, Lennon, Murphy, Rowan, West, etc...

I like Ryan on a girl, but I probably wouldn't if I didn't know a really, really sweet girl by the name. She's said she likes it, but that it gives her problems constantly, with spelling, sex confusion (if they had only seen the name, and not her), and pronunciation (some people, she says, try to make it sound more "feminine" and say, "ree-anne," that sort of thing). I remember asking her once why her parents named her that. She seemed confused by the question, but as children, I had no idea Ryan was considered in any way unisex and I'm sure she had no idea it was considered in any way strange.

I like Reese, although I prefer it on a boy (and spelled Reece). That's the only unisex name I can think of right now that I really like, although a guilty pleasure of mine is Addison on a girl (although I'd never, ever use it a female).

How about Brianna?

From: [identity profile] hjart.livejournal.com
Personally, I would go for a more feminine name that could be shortened to something more masculine, just to give her more options later in life. Charlotte called Charlie, Brianna called Ryan or Brian, Nicole called Nick, etc.
