What do you think of the name Ryan for a girl?
I really like more masculine/unisex names for girls. I also like James/Jamie. What are some of your fav masculine girls names?

Date: 2007-12-30 04:41 pm (UTC)I'm not really a fan of Ryan though.
I love Aubrey and Elliot on girls.
Sometimes I like more feminine sounding names on boys as well, like Francis and Dominic =).

Date: 2007-12-31 09:47 am (UTC)I definitely don't like originally female names on boys. Unlike girls with (slightly) masculine names, boys with girl names will be bullied. A lot. I think because it's ok for a girl to be 'tough', but it's not really ok for a boy to be feminine. In society, at least.

& To me they sound feminine because I've only met females with those names.

Date: 2007-12-30 04:54 pm (UTC)That being said, about the most masculine names that I like for girls are Addison, Harper, and Morgan. I've never known any males with those names, though, so I think of them as being female. None of them I'd ever use as a first name, I don't think.

Date: 2007-12-30 05:50 pm (UTC)The only unisex names I like on girls are Ashley and Taylor. Jordan is okay, too, but I don't particularly like it on either sex.
Since we're on the topic, what is it with giving girls masculine names? I've heard people say that it's because they want their daughters to sound "strong." As a feminist, I find this practice really...sexist. It's equating femininity with weakness and saying that a girl has to be masculine to be strong. Who's to say that an Elizabeth or Catherine can't be strong, too?

Date: 2007-12-31 09:58 am (UTC)If I were to name my daughter Aubrey, or whatever, I am not trying to prove a point about gender. I just like that name on girls!

Date: 2007-12-30 07:24 pm (UTC)I generally just like boy's names on girls and girl's names on boys. I shouldn't use my kids to prove a point about gender, you know? If they want to break down gender barriers, that's fine, but I feel like my kids are already going to have enough to deal with in that department with their two moms without the help;)

Date: 2007-12-30 08:33 pm (UTC)Christian as a female name was one of the most popular names in England, and rising in popularity in the 17th century.

It was in the top 50 names in the 16th century as well.

This is a source from 13th century Northumberland, in which Christian was the third most popular girl's name.

Date: 2007-12-30 08:25 pm (UTC)My daughter's name is Avery, so obviously I like that. I also like Jordan, Harper, and Ellis for a girl. If I were pregnant with a girl now, I would definitely be leaning toward Harper.

Date: 2007-12-31 05:27 pm (UTC)I like Reese, although I prefer it on a boy (and spelled Reece). That's the only unisex name I can think of right now that I really like, although a guilty pleasure of mine is Addison on a girl (although I'd never, ever use it a female).
How about Brianna?
