With the birth of Ben Affleck and Jennifer Garner's new daughter, is the name Violet going to take off? I really like it, so I wouldn't mind seeing it a little more often.

I think so too. Some of our family friends just had a baby a few weeks ago and her middle name is Violet. It's seems to be becoming more common. It's a nice name.

I used to take care of an old lady in the first nursing home I worked in (this was like 6 yrs ago.) Her name was Violet. Her granddaughter (who happened to be one of my bosses) called her "Violence" b/c she was mean and bitter and only liked a certain few people (fortunately, I was one of the few she liked.)

Don't know what the point of that was, it just came into my head.

Was it actually confirmed that that is her name? I heard people saying that name before she was even born, so I'm not so sure that's definitely her name.

Personally, I like the name Purple much better. Violet reminds me of Violet Beauregard, the gum chewing overachiever from Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory.

Nah, Violet's not that bad, I was just curious if it's actually been confirmed through an announcement yet. ;)

I saw it in the newspaper post-birth so I would assume it's correct.

Purple is a noun, not a name.

Clearly, I was joking.

It wasn't very clear to me, hence my response. Sarcasm is easily lost when transmitted over the internet, especially in a baby naming community that is often filled with some atrocities.

I was going to write "j/k" after my comment about Purple, but I thought it would be redundant. Guess not.

Purple is a color, Apple is a fruit, but these things will happen. Not on my watch or yours though. ;)

I usually avoid such snippy remarks, but I couldn't contain myself this time. Glad it was just a joke. :)

Me too, I was worried for a second.

I am not sure about this whole color theme, but it's a decent enough name. I guess it's better than Orange, Brown, or Yellow, right?

Since they aren't flowers, yeah. It's a flower name, not a colour theme, like Primrose, Rose, Lily, and so on. Of course that opens it up to Stinkwort and Hydrangea, but you can't have everything!

You laugh, but I work in a place where we take names for orders and there really IS a Hydrangea running around my college's campus. And also a Crysanthemum, only she spells it worse than I just did.

(Side note: I hate people.)

they named her violet after jennifer garner's grandmother

-cute name
-named after family member

wow, it's nice to see some celebrities don't lose all their brain cells when naming their children..

(kal-el? rumer? ..)

Hey, don't knock Rumer. Rumer Godden (http://www.rumergodden.com/) was great, and they named their daughter after her, it's not made up, at least.

There is no excuse for Kal-El. Or Pilot Inspektor.

ok, i agree with the rumer comment..i didn't know she was named after her.

pilot inspektor is a horrible name. i forgot about that one.

I like it. And it probably will take off, tends to happen with celebreties. Like Scarlett and Renee have become more popular as the actresses have become better known.

Violet is a kick-ass name :)
It fits all the categories of 'Old lady', nature, and colour names which are really fashionable right now, but is still fairly offbeat.
One of my late Great grandmothers was named that, so I liked it before it was cool.

i guess i'm the only person who thinks it's a terrible name. yuck can't stand it. but it is nice that it was her grandmother's name and that she's keeping the family name thing going.

i love the name. i have a student whose first name is violet, which i think is perfectly lovely, but she goes by her middle name beth, which i think is boring and common. :(

I like Violet, but it does remind me of old women. The same thing with Rose. They're pretty names though, just not something I would pick. I think they're alot better as middle names.
