(no subject)

We found out about 2 weeks ago that the baby on the way is a little girl.  We've chosen the name Anastasia Sophia, but lots of people(mainly family members... mainly my mom and my MIL) are expressing their extreme dislike of the name.  Is it really that terrible?  The biggest complaint is that it's a long name for a little girl.  My feeling is that the name should be appropriate as an adult, as she can always go by a nickname as a child.  The name has plenty of nicknames like Ana/Anna, Annie, or Stazi.

The siblings are Tristan Gwydion and Richard Joseph(who goes by RJ since he's a third).

I like both names on their own, but together it seems like an excess of -ia's. And Sophia Anastasia sounds better. Maybe Anastasia Sophie? Although that sounds a little stunted. Sophie Anastasia could work, though.

As a note, they're both also very Greek names, so people also might assume she's Greek. Unless you are Greek/have Greek heritage, then that would be okay.

I think most people think of Anastasia as a Russian name because of Czar Nicolas II's daughter and all of the stories that surround her. And Sophia is such a popular name across cultural lines that I don't think people think of it as merely a Greek name; if it was something more culturally specific, I could understand it, but I highly doubt the majority of people are going to hear the name and think, "Hey, I bet she's Greek!"

Well, I've known a few Greeks named Anastasia and Sophia, so perhaps I'm a bit biased xD

[identity profile] satunian.livejournal.com 2007-12-21 04:52 am (UTC)(link)
I happen to know that they are both greek names as well, so fellow name geeks like us light wonder that but I highly doubt other people would. Anastasia could go either way with being Greek or Russian and Sophia is so common all around, it's really not going to slap anyone in the face with Greekness as a name like Athena might. Lol

I love it! Anastasia is one of my favorites, and I think it sounds great as a combo. I like Anna or Anya as nicknames, but I know two Anastasias who both go by Stacy.

I think it sounds great with your other kids' names, too.

I really like it . . .

[identity profile] anapology.livejournal.com 2007-12-20 10:14 pm (UTC)(link)
I think it's beautiful.
Really stunning and eyecatching :-) it is a long name, but hey.. that's half it's charm.

Just, whatever you do, don't let her o by Stacey. it's the trashiest, ugliest name I can think of.

Don't let your family ruin the name!

[identity profile] decembermalice.livejournal.com 2007-12-20 11:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Keep in mind while bashing names that some of us are stuck with those names. :P

I can think of a lot trashier names, for the record. Didn't we see a whole list of stripper-ish names a while back?

I do love the name Anastasia, in any case, and I like Anna as a nickname better than Stacey.

[identity profile] anapology.livejournal.com 2007-12-20 11:53 pm (UTC)(link)
Didn't say the people with those names are trashy, just the name.

It's a personal thing..I get called Stacey all the time and it drives me mental. People don't hear my name properly (Sophie). Opinions on names are only that, opinions :-)

[identity profile] decembermalice.livejournal.com 2007-12-20 11:59 pm (UTC)(link)
I wasn't really upset, no worries. I also dislike my name.

People also don't hear Stacey properly. I get Tracy, Lacey, Stephanie (?!?), Cece...and more. It's ridiculous.

[identity profile] anapology.livejournal.com 2007-12-21 12:04 am (UTC)(link)
good good :-)

Cece.. thats a cool name..

and for the record, I also dislike mine.

I don't dislike it, but it sounds like a royal's name to me. And I know some people are really into it--I guess you are too--but I can't get behind it.

[identity profile] mrsduryee.livejournal.com 2007-12-20 10:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Do you say Ah-nuh-stah-see-uh or Ann-uh-stay-jhuh?

Too many -ias if you say it the first way.

[identity profile] kandeekiss.livejournal.com 2007-12-20 10:54 pm (UTC)(link)
I like Anastasia. I have a friend who's daughter has that name and she calls her Annie, and it's adorable. I like Sophia as well, but I think personally if I were to give a long first name, I would choose a shorter middle name, something with one to two syllabls. But that's just me. It's not a horrible name though.

[identity profile] heather80.livejournal.com 2007-12-20 11:27 pm (UTC)(link)
I think Stacey is another nickname.

[identity profile] politicking.livejournal.com 2007-12-20 11:42 pm (UTC)(link)
i like Sophia Anastasia more... i think because AnastaSia Sophia, the Ss are so close, you know what i mean? but with it the other way around, they are a little farther apart.

if that made any sense at all lol.

[identity profile] politicking.livejournal.com 2007-12-20 11:44 pm (UTC)(link)
btw nickname wise you have a lot of choices:

Ana
Annie
Anya
Staci/Stacey
Stasia
Tia
Sia

I love Anastasia, but Sophia not so much. I think there's too many A's. How about Anastasia Sophie?

[identity profile] miss-tee.livejournal.com 2007-12-21 01:43 am (UTC)(link)
I think it's lovely

[identity profile] daydream11.livejournal.com 2007-12-21 03:58 am (UTC)(link)
I love the name Anastasia, but paired with Sophia makes it awkward the first few go-rounds.

[identity profile] satunian.livejournal.com 2007-12-21 04:50 am (UTC)(link)
It's your baby, not your mother's or his mother's so it's really up to you. if you like the name go for it. It's not a horrible OMG please no name like Chlamydia or soemthing. Lol

I think it's fine, especially with the nickname logic. Just make sure your last name doesn't begin with the letter S though, ASS would be unfortunate initials.

[identity profile] satunian.livejournal.com 2007-12-21 04:57 am (UTC)(link)
By the way, me and a friend of mine used to joke about having a daughter together and naming her Anastasia Charlotte... I think Charlotte flows nicely with Anastasia as well so I thought I'd mention it :)

[identity profile] jordle.livejournal.com 2007-12-21 10:33 am (UTC)(link)
I think Anastasia Sophia is really pretty and even if I didn't what right do I have to tell you what you should name your child?

You need to name her what you want to name her. I wouldn't listen to others. They'll love the baby no matter what you call her :)

[identity profile] bobinwales.livejournal.com 2007-12-21 03:59 pm (UTC)(link)
I like Anastasia Sophia, but my main reason for commenting is to profess my undying love of the name Gwydion. :)

[identity profile] ugottafriend.livejournal.com 2007-12-22 01:32 am (UTC)(link)
It's a fine name, and don't worry about what the family says. It's not their child, their choice, or their business.
