My brother (24) is named Sean, the other day my roommate (from upstate ny, we live in manhattan) said she thinks Sean isn't the right spelling and that Shawn is. Sean is spelled as thus in my family because that is the traditional way to spell it in Ireland, but what do you think of the various spellings, Sean, Shawn, Shaun?
Personally, I hate anything besides Sean.

Also, what do you think of surnames as middle names? ie. the mothers maiden name as the childs middle name.

i like the name Sean. i prefer it as Sean, but don't mind Shaun or Shawn.

one of my son's middle names is my last name (hopefully my maiden name someday lol). i had a friend growing up who had his mother's maiden name as his middle... his brother did, too. i don't mind it.

i dont like surnames as middle names. like when it is stevens and people always go "isnt that a boys name" because they dont hear the second S and you wish you just had a regular middle name. yeah, personal experience. grandmother's maiden name. and it isnt even only mine, my mother and brother have it too.

that said, it can be totally fine, i'm just biased because of what i went through.

Now, I prefer Sean. When I was younger, I prefered Shawn because Sean confused the hell out of me - I think I was seven or eight before I realized that Sean was pronounced SHAWN and not SEEN.

It depends on the surname I suppose. My boyfriend's middle name is Rowe and I think that's a cool middle name but I don't know that it could really work for a girl.

My Uncle's name is Sean (same with your family- Irish spelling). My boyfriend's best friend spells his name Shawn. I like the latter better. I don't like Shaun.

I really only like Sean. I can deal with Shawn, but it looks...so 1980s to me. Sean looks more classic. Shaun looks awful.

I don't mind surnames as middle names, especially if it's the mother's maiden name/another family surname, but I'm not really a fan of surnames as first names.

Sean is less common here, but I prefer it. My mother's maiden name is a common boy's name, but gaining popularity as a girl's name as well, so it is feasible that one day, one of my little ones will have my mum's name. About 1/3 of my friends growing up had their mother's maiden name as a part of their name.

Sean is the correct spelling. I cannot stand Shawn or Shaun (and I have strong opinions on the name as I'm married to a Sean).

I have a surname as a middle name (my grandmother's maiden name). Not crazy about it. It's a fairly uncommon name and I have to explain it and then say yes, I know that's not a girl's name (it's also sporadically used as a male first name). I really wish I'd had that same grandmother's first name (or heck, my other grandmother's first name) as a middle.

I think Sean is the most common spelling. I could be wrong, but most of the Seans I've known have spelt it Sean, with a few Shauns, and maybe one or two Shawns.

I prefer Sean, but for some reason I don't mind Shaun. Maybe just because I liked Shaun of the Dead. :P

My niece has her mom's maiden name as a middle name. As long as it sounds good with the first and last name I don't see a problem with it.

Well my cousins name is Shawn, and so is my hubby, spelt Sean. I prefer Shawn because it looks like its actually spelt right =)

I don't really like the name at all, but I prefer Shawn. Beyond that, Shaun. I don't like Sean at all.

Surnames as middle names is a nice way of honoring someone without loading your child down with a horrible first name, I think. However, I also believe some surnames were meant to remain just that. My last name is Coin, and if I ever have a child, Coin as a middle name is completely out of the question.

I have a friend named Sean and we call him Bean and Pean on a regular basis. I think they all look 'right' but I think Sean is my favourite/the one I'm more used to.
