Ok well we offically found out today that our baby is a girl so me and my husband have been toying with names for a bit. First off my husband likes the name Ryan for a girl, are their any girlier spellings?

I am not sold on it. My front runners are Audrey, Madeline and Avery but he isn't sold on any of them so any suggestions?

I want something that is easy to spell but not TOO common. I am pretty traditional in taste so anything is welcome! Our last name starts with an L. Thanks in advance.

I have a student who is Riann. And I've also seen Ryann and Ryanne, though the "e" changes the pronounciation, IMO. Btw, I <3 Madeline. I also like Madelena. :) We're pretty sure (well, this week sure, lol) that our daughter (due 4/28) will be Isabella Rose. :)

I went to school with a female Ryan & everyone assumed she was a boy. I know it's more common now to use names differently, but she also caught a lot of teasing for her name. I don't like it for a girl, myself. The only girlier spelling I can come up with would be Ryann(e), but to me that's a whole different name. Plus if I saw just Ryann, I would probably guess typo for Ryan & still think boy. =P

If you go with the name Ryan for a girl, PLEASE don't mess with the spelling. "creative" spellings are a pet peeve of mine, and working in a place where I have to look up people by name, it's really difficult if I'm looking for a Ryan, and all I see is Rianne. Or something.

I have a friend named Ryan, and she likes it just fine.

Audrey and Madeline - HELL YES. Avery and Ryan - please no. Please. Avery is so trendy, so dated, and so just...egh. And Ryan is SO masculine, and it's very popular on boys. Audrey and Madeline are gorgeous, timeless names that aren't going to date her and that won't make her sound like a 5 year old when she's 30.

If you don't want something too common, I'd stay away from names like Avery (Bailey is another one that's close) because they're actually really popular among the babies born in the last few years and my guess is that they're going to get more popular. I've yet to see a baby born in the past, well.. truthfully, I know one Audrey who is 21, and I know six Averys and three Baileys and all but two of them are under the age of 5.

P.S. If your husband wants to use a unisex name, can you maybe talk him into using something feminine that has a boy's name as a nickname? For instance, Jocelyn or Josephine could be shortened to Joey, Charlotte to Charlie, Elizabeth to Brett, etc. That might be a compromise if he likes names like Ryan and you like names like Audrey.

Haha, oh man, if I heard Mason on a girl, I'd flip. I HATE boy names on girls. As a feminist, I get really annoyed when people are like "I want to use a boy's name on my daughter because it makes her sound strong," and I'm like SERIOUSLY? Femininity=weakness? Do you WANT me to prove you wrong? Sorry, haha. *steps off soap box*

That might be the way to go if you don't want to use a unisex name on your daughter, which I'd say NO to, not just because of my own issues with it, but also because it's SO trendy right now. If you want something unique, I'd stick to the classic/timeless names because they are quickly losing popularity (this community notwithstanding. We're an anomaly;))

I taught a really cute little 8 year old named Riane (pronounced Ryan) of course people wanted to call her REE-ann. She hated that people could never pronounce her name "properly." So that might be something to consider when trying to girly-up the name.

Madeline! I love it! Convince him to name your daughter Madeline Ryan and he can call her Ryan and everyone else in the world can call her Madeline and be done with it. hahaha
