what do people say?
Dec. 11th, 2007 06:35 pmAs I'm one of many Jennifers, no one ever really says much when i introduce myself or anything, but when my Aunt is out with my cousin named Lydia, she always gets compliments on her name.
What do people say about your/your children('s) name(s) when you go out?

Date: 2007-12-11 11:44 pm (UTC)My name is Jennifer too. It *is* a pretty name but because it's common, I don't think I've had a single compliment on it in my life. I definitely want my kids to have names that receive compliments.
this is usually how the conversation goes...
Date: 2007-12-11 11:57 pm (UTC)me: "hello, this is kimber"
caller: "hi, amber.."
me: "no, it's kimber"
caller: "ginger?:
me: "kim-ber"
caller: "like a tree in the forest? TIIIIMMMMBBBEERRRRR!!"
me: *facepalm*
in person
me: "hi, i'm kimber"
them: "nice to meet you, kimberly"
me: "no, it's kimber"
them: "oh, ok.. kim"
me: *facepalm*

Date: 2007-12-12 01:17 am (UTC)"That's such a pretty name."
"That's unique."
I had one guy tell me he'd never heard the name before.
Some people look at me like I'm not really sure what my name is.
"Kiersten? You mean, with a K?" No with a Z, jackass...
And 80% of the time I'm repeating myself and then giving up and answering to "Kursten" "Kristen" "Kristy" "Kristine" or whatever my genius customers come up with.
I do love my name. I just wish people wouldn't act like I'm teaching them an ancient language when I introduce myself.
Me: "Hi, I'm Kiersten."
Idiots: "Kristen?"
Me: (with more enunciation) "No, Kiersten."
Idiots: "Kursten."
Me: "No. Keeeeeeeer *pause* Sten."
Idiots: "Keeeeeer" *pause*
Me: "Sten."
Idiots: "Keeeeer *pause* Sten. Oh, Kursten."
*rolls eyes*

"Um, no, it's mar-tee-NA"
"That's a cool/pretty/unique name! Do you play tennis?
"No."
"Why not?"
"Because I don't. o.O"
"Were you named after the tennis players?"
"No. It's Polish. It's spelt with a 'y'"
And i always automatically make sure people spell my name right when they write it down, as they either spell it Martina or Mitina

Me: No, it's Erin with an E.
*repeatedly facepalms as they spell it Aeron, Earon, Aarone, or Aaren*
People familiar with 'Erin' as a girls' name do this -
Them: What's your last name? Do you have a nickname? We already have a few Erins here.

That made me laugh so much =P!
But yeah, it must be very annoying ;)

Date: 2007-12-12 03:51 pm (UTC)When they see my name written down they usually call me Slow-annuh. And then I tell them: 'no it's SLOANE.' So every other schoolyear has been the same.
When I'm visiting my family in the UK people give me compliments on my name, especially when I'm in London, because of Sloane Square.
