I have yet to conceive (I plan on trying soon), but I'm totally stuck on names. I'm looking for something unconventional yet pretty. The surname would be Winston, by the way.

Boys
Aelfric Ryan
Thierry Khalil
Abdi Muhammad
Ahmed Khalil
Cassius Octavius

Girls
Starlynn Miranda
Léafa Jennifer
Indie Zada
Avalon Emelie
Ivy Aurelia

What do you think? Are those names too weird?

Yes. Dear sweet Lord yes. You can do unusual without straying into the bizarre. Besides, a lot of these are ethnic names that completely clash with your surname.

The only name I really like on your list is Ivy Aurelia.

I would suggest using names that don't sound like you pulled them out of Scheherazade's "1001 Nights."

I really like the name Ivy but the others are really out there. There's a really good book called "Cool Names for Babies". I don't remember who it is by but it is soooo helpful with tons of ideas for names that are unconventional.

The only one I like is Cassius Octavius, and only then if you plan on hopping in a time machine back to Ancient Rome. The others scare me.

i love that your names are original but they're not just bastardized forms of popular names today

i really like indie aurelia as a combinatino or ivy emelie

for boys
i LOVE khalil its one of my FAVORITE names but i prefer the spelling kahlil

so i definitely would vote for any name with that in it

EEGAD!

If you want unconventional you will stay away from Muhammad or Ahmed! Just because they are not used much in some parts of the world they are like every other man's name in other places. EEGAD! Muhammed is like the equivilant of John Smith!

I don't like any of your boys names. A couple of your girls names are okay.

I hope you were joking with some of those names.

Well, Hrm. I am not fond of any of those names, but Ivy seems to be the best out of all of those names. I wish you the best of luck if you do decide to name your child Cassius Octavius.

I love Ivy Aurelia, but the rest are a little too out there for me. It's so funny, I've had names picked out for about a month now, and now you and the next poster used both halves of the girl name (Eloise Aurelia). Neither name is even close to popular right now, so now I'm kind of freaked out!

Starlynn ... *sniff* *sniff* I smell a stripper pole in someone's future with that name.

I don't mind the girl names, except for Starlynn which I think sounds like something a four year old would name her Barbie.

The boy name are ok, but somewhat pretentious sounding. The last one is too gladiator. The others I think could be pulled off by the right person.

I like Cassius though but I would use it as more of a middle name. I also like the name Ivy.

Avalon reminds of a street (there's a street in L.A named Avalon) and Miranda, to me is more a last name than a first name to me.

Aelfric Ryan ~ I am a medievalist, so I'm biased! :)
Thierry Khalil

Cassius Octavius

Girls
Starlynn Miranda

Indie Zada
Avalon Emelie
Ivy Aurelia

I've marked the one's I like personally. I also do like Ivy, it's my grandmother's name, but I know that a) she always hated it, and b) she was named after an aunt who also loathed it...

I like..
Boys

Thierry Khalil- Very cool, just make sure he never gets called Terry!
Cassius Octavius- Quite liket his, i know a Cassian & that works well too.

Girls
Starlynn Miranda- i dont like Starlynn much, but i like Starla & Anastazia (ana-star-zia)
Indie Zada- hehe i love this, Indi is such a cool name, but i think i would have to call her India/Indiana & use Indie as the nickname, i wouldnt have a problem with it being practically her name though. Like most Elizabeths are never called Elizabeth, but lizzy & beth..etc.
Avalon Emelie- Like this a lot...especially Emelie, but the 'lon' ending of Avalon sounds sa bit too masculine. What about Avalie?
Ivy Aurelia- Very pretty :-)

wooooh, done!

I really dont like any of those names maybe because I am Australian and no person I know would ever name there kids such names... If you really like culture such as " Arabic " maybe you should try picking names that the child wil represent rather then giving them an arabic name because YOU like the culture.. Remember the kid has to live with the name... not you...

I love all the girls names but not the boys!

Can you imagine explaining to your son that he was named after one of the most prolific stikers England has ever seen (Thierry Henry)?

Date: 2005-11-26 09:12 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] peach-rose-girl.livejournal.com
Thierry is ok, but I would prefer the English spelling. Cassius is nice - it's uncommon - but not with Octavius. I'd pick a more traditional middle name for that one.

I like Zada. Indie seems a little more like a nickname. How about India (like India Wilkes in Gone With the Wind, or India Arie)? Indie or Indy could be a nickname.

Avalon Emelie I like. If I were to go for an alternate spelling of Emily I'd pick Emilie or Emmalee, though. Unless you are going for more of a French pronounciation, in which it would be spelled Amalie or Amelie. Also, I'd definitely call her Ava or something.

Ivy Aurelia is a really pretty name. Ivy Amelia is nice too. :-)

i like cassius, i think its cool and plus he could be nicknamed cash, whic his a cool name in that cowboy sort of way. just pair it with something more traditional like james or something.

ivy and indie are pretty girl names, and would work well also as an adult (not cutesy little girl names).

If you're not Arabic yourself, I wouldn't give your child an Arabic name. There will be much making fun of. That's like naming a white girl Lacretia. (what my MIL would have named my partner had he been a girl *shudder*)

Are there no names that you find displeasing? Is it so unusual and shocking for someone to completely dislike a name?

Date: 2005-11-29 11:04 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] tinyholidays.livejournal.com
(And/Or) Lucretia is a famous figure in Roman legend/history (via Livy). If I remember properly from Latin class, the story goes that her husband was camped out with Lucius Tarquinius Superbus (the last king of Rome), and all the men were telling stories of their wives at home. Lucretia's husband bragged that if they went to his house right now, his wife would have the house perfectly decorated and cleaned, would be looking beautiful, and would be able to have a fantastic meal on the table for them in minutes. The men decided to take him up on it, and she was as wonderful a woman as he had bragged. After they all returned to the road, the king returned and raped her. Lucretia was an honorable woman, and, by the (double) standards of those times, this meant that she felt incredibly shamed by the rape and couldn't face the idea of continuing to live. She summoned her husband and sons and told them of the rape, and, asking them to avenge her, killed herself before them. The rebellion that followed is mythically credited as being the end of the Roman monarchy and the beginning of the republic.

Yes. Your children's classmates won't commend them on their pretty names (although the teachers will, to be polite) -- they'll mock them on the playground.

You should consider where the names you choose come from.

Do you know what "aurelia" means? It's a genus of jellyfish-- or the pupa of an insect.

If you want your little boy to end up on the no-fly list-- no matter if your last name is Winston (by the way, I love that last name, always been one of my favourites)-- go ahead and name him Abdi Muhammed or Ahmed Khalil. I don't agree that he should end up on the no-fly; in this culture, though, it's quite probable.

Please, for the love of God, do not name your little boy Cassius Octavius. Pick one or the other, at the most. And consider this: the most famous Cassius of them all changed his name... to Mohammed Ali. My parents were quite unhappy indeed when I changed mine, even to a variant of my middle name; if you spend all this time dreaming up fantastic names like this, and your kid turns up hating the name you picked, then it will bring you down. (Cassius means "vain", by the way; Octavius means "the eighthborn"-- something to consider, if you're talking about your firstborn here.)

Miranda-- especially when combined with Starlynn-- sounds to me like a stripper's name... or a batty old fortune teller. It means "admirable beauty; one who is wonderful," so it sounds good... but consider also the image it presents, and consider what your child will think of herself if people around her first think of her as a batty old fortune teller or a stripper (or anything else) because of her name.

Kids with accented letters in their names (Léafa Jennifer) may have a hard time with it when someone asks them how to spell their name.

I really love Avalon, though, and Ivy has always been a favourite name of mine (as well as Holly).

In conclusion: know what you're doing-- look it up here (http://parenting.ivillage.com/pregnancy/babynames/finder/0,,,00.html), even. I would choose a first name that is easy to spell and to pronounce (phonetic; Avalon is good for this), and then get mystical with the middle name. You might even be able to make "Avalon Miranda Winston" work out-- I just wouldn't go crazy with it.

You do have some nice names here... but I will warn you that if you have a kid at your age and name him or her something far-out like the names you've picked, you may well end up regretting it when you're older, especially if the child is unhappy with their name.

As a name, I think it comes more from the latin for 'gold' (aurem).

You could wait until you learn Arabic before choosing an Arabic name, perhaps?
