so i like the idea of naming a daughter margaret after my grandmother. however, most people i know named margaret hate their name (heck, even my grandmother went my her middle name instead).  i don't like any of the traditional nicknames for it either.

moral of the story: is it reasonable for maya to be a nickname for margaret?

I like the name Margaret, but I hate all of the nicknames.

I think Maya is reasonable... I've heard nicknames that are much more of a stretch than that.

I think Maya could work as a nickname for Margaret, but I prefer Meg or Molly as nicknames.

I love the name, btw, and it's also my grandmother's and she doesn't hate it. I also know two girls my age (early 20s) named Margaret who love their names:)

Yep.

What if you named her Margaret May? It would be a pretty pretty combo, and make Maya even more plausible.

I love the name Margaret! It's my grandmother's name, and the formal version of my mother's name (she's legally Margo). I like the nicknames Marlo, Daisy, Garet, and Greta for nicknames.

Also, I strongly feel that any nickname that's vaguely similar to a given name works. I like Dav for Daphne and Enna for Eleanor. I like Maya best as a nickname for something anyways, Margaret works beautifully.

Psh, those people are crazy! I'm Margaret (called Meg for short) and I love it! It's classic, but has fifty billion nick-names so I wasn't stuck as Margaret as a kid. Not to mention it has a certain sort of class if they ever want to go into show-business (which is my plan).

Anyway...it's reasonable, yes, but unfortunate. Out of all the nick-names for Margaret, there isn't one you like? Personally, I'm biased towards Meg, but there's Maggie, Peggy, Margo, Margie, or even something like Gretchen.

Or Greta!

I love Margaret, with the nickname Meg. Definitely one of my favourites.

What is your grandmothers middle name? Would you use that instead of Margaret?

I think Maya is cute.. it's a stretch but it can work.

Maybe you should use Margaret as a middle name if you're concerned about it's use as a first name.

it begins with M, so sure. Or name her your grandmother's favorite girls' name, that could work too.

I like Margaret but if you're unsure, how about Margot?

I think Maya is a little odd as a nick name, it being a full name on it's own, completely separate from Margaret (as opposed to Meg or Maggie)

Ha, I ask the same question except "Is it reasonable to name a girl Matilda or Alice?" I LOVE the name Margaret, but I agree that everyone named that seems to hate it. Margaret has tons of nicknames, so I wouldn't worry too much. And I agree with the poster who offered Margot.

I think Maya works perfectly fine as a nickname for Margaret (but I personally like the name too much to even consider using a nickname).

Hmm I guess I'm the only one... But I think Maya is a little bit too much of stretch to be a nickname for Margaret. Mara, maybe?
