Does popularity affect your name choices? I know I wish Ava wasn't so darn high up and that pretty much takes it out of the running. Here's my latest favorite favorites and their 2006 SSA rankings...

5 - Ava
82 - Amelia
92 - Aubrey
105 - Molly
578 - Marie
921 - Adelaide

36 - Jackson
149 - Maxwell
155 - Grant
220 - Calvin

It might a little bit. I'd never use anything from the top 10 or even the top 20. After that, I think it depends on the area you live in.

I've always loved the name Ava too, but since I am yet to meet anyone with the name it's still my favorite for a girl.
I don't really worry about the popularity if a name, after all so long as you like it that's what matters, right?

Poor Aubrey... I hate how that's being stolen to a girls name... so wrong.

Aubrey is the name of one of my future twin boys. I adore it so.

It's not a recent thing though.

It's not very old either... my brother is an aubrey after my great grandfather, and to be honest, the oldest female Aubrey I know is 15.. so its' nto that old either.

Doesn't change how much I hate it. Aubrey belongs on boys.

I should mention my brother is 27.

I'm 26 and when I was born it was ranked 416 for girls (not in top 20 but still not unpopular) and 941 for boys.

Just to be clear, I'm totally not saying that you aren't entitled to your opinion and I agree that Aubrey was originally a boys name and I understand that you think it belongs on boys too and of course I repect that :)

I'm just saying that it was 'taken over' by girls sooner than you might think.

No, not really. As a girl who grew up rarely ever knowing anyone with her name (or ever being able to find her full name on one of those personalized magnets), I was never being scarred by being one of fifteen Jessicas in my class. If I was torn between two names, though, I might use popularity as a factor to make a decision.

My favorites are (with 2006 SSA rankings):

Anna - #23
Carina - #864
Elizabeth - #11
Emily - #1
Francesca - #428
Isabella - #4
Lola - #280
Sophia - #9

Aidan - #44
Ethan - #4
Jack - #35
Julian - #65
Luke - #43
Nathan - #23
Roderick - #730
William - #10

It's not so much that I don't like popular names anymore, but... well, I guess I don't. LOL I mean, it's hard to explain. They just become so blah to me that I stop liking them as a choice but I still like them as a name/sound. Ya know?

My top fives of each and their 2006 popularities. The only ones I have to "worry about" are Chloe, Nathaniel and Kevin, and of those, only Nathaniel is a top top favorite.

- Margaret - 161

- Lorraine - not in the top 1000

My favorite boy names (James, William, Sam, Henry, Charlie, Elliot) tend to be pretty popular, while my favorite girl names (Louisa, Harriet, Eleanor) tend to be outside of the top 100. But if we're just talking about names I would DEFINITELY use...

Samuel -- 25
Elliot -- 372
James -- 16
Charles -- 60

Piper -- 246
Louisa -- not in the top 1000
Catherine -- 122
Maren -- 929

Being a Samantha from the late 80's, I never had a problem with having a lot of kids with the same name around. It gets a bit annoying sometimes because we all go by Sam and I'm hearing impaired so the second I hear "Sam!" I'm turing every which way trying to figure out where it is coming from when half the time it is for someone else.

So, popularity really wouldn't affect my name choices at all. I mean, I didn't have a problem wit hit. Most people don't seem to have a problem with it. Most people I know, anyway.

My favorites:
Gianna(98) Leigh(not in the top 1000)
Audrey(68) Olivia(7) or Grace (17)
Charlee(915) Austin(not in the top 1000)
Caitey (not in the top 1000) Lynn(not in the top 1000)
Penelope(481) Chole(not in the top 1000)

Elliott(388) Adrian(63)
Landon(49) Miles(202)
Micah(148) Cole(84)
Beck(not in the top 1000) Greer(not in the top 1000)
Gabriel(28) Ezra(340)

There are names I love -for example Emma(2) and Matthew(5)- that I wouldn't use as first names because they are too popular and too common.
But the rest I don't really care that much.

I do look at how popular names are here though..
I love Natalie and it's popular but here I haven't heard the name used much at all. But.. Kayla here is EVERYWHERE and I wouldn't use it because of that.

The ratings don't affect my favorites, because these have been my favorites pretty much ever since I can remember. My favorite name is Emily. I figure it will fall out of fashion. Then I'll be stuck with a dated favorite, but whatever. I liked it before it was cool to, dammit!
