I never would have liked it, but I used to have an awesome, awesome coworker by that name. We called him Rue for short, but when he introduced himself to people, he said, "Name's LaRue, as in 'street.'" I think it went over most people's heads.

Sometimes we called him Lash La Rue, after the old western character actor, sometimes just Lash.

I think it would be a tough name for most guys to pull off...the La especially makes it so feminine...but he managed.

I've seen it a few times as a surname, but it's just weird as a given name (first or middle). Even as a last name, it's not often spelled like "the street."

Every time I see it spelled that way, I think of the actors giving Valjean's address in Les Miserables. But I'm positive that's just me.

Now that you've mentioned it I think of Les Mis too! I believe it was his mothers maiden name. His name is La Rue Jaques Chargois. He's black. lol

It does make more sense if it's his mother's maiden name. I'm not fond of that trend, but it does make more sense.
