Okay, I know I just made a post.. but I am completely devastated right now.
I didn't realize that people pronounce "Gianna" differently... until a few minutes ago when I was discussing it with a friend.

So, the question: How do you pronounce Gianna?

Also...
-Would you name your child something that people commonly pronounced in different ways?
-What do you like better- Audrey or Aubrey? And what middle name for either one... Grace or Olivia?

G-ah-nuh... like i've heard all the Philly & South Jersey Italians say it lol.

& people do it all the time... for instance: Brianna. some say it Bree-anna, some Bree-ah-na. Adrianna is said A-dree-anna & A-dree-ah-na.

also, i like both equally. Audrey Grace is cute.

soft G, like George..-ahh-nnuh

gee-arr-nuh

I would,if I loved the name enough and it was a recognised spelling and pronunciation.

I prefer Audrey Olivia. Grace doesn't go witth either of them.

Audrey, definitely. It's classic and timeless. Aubrey sounds much trendier and it was also originally a boy's name, and is still sometimes used as such. Audrey is much better. I like Audrey Grace.

I pronounce Gianna as Gee-ah-nuh. If you are really really worried about people pronouncing it incorrectly, I'd go with something else, because chances are good that someone will pronounce it incorrectly once in a while. However, it's not exactly a difficult name to pronounce and she/you can always correct people. If it's going to bother you a lot if it's mispronounced, I'd stick with something like Audrey. If it doesn't bother you and you love the name, I'd stick with it and just correct people.

I don't think Gianna will be a problem in the same way that Lynze is. As a Lindsay, I would hate Lynze, too, hahaha.

I like Audrey better, but Gianna is okay, too. Go with the one that means something to you.

Gee-AH-nah. I love the name. I'd never worry about mispronunciation. If my parents worried about how other people would say my name, I would have been Jessica or Melissa or Jennifer and not Kiersten. =]

To me, Aubrey is a redhead name. Every Aubrey I've ever known has been a redhead. I like Audrey Grace.

There are millions of names that people pronounce differently - my best friend is an Andrea. When I met her I asked which pn she preferred...she said she'd answer to all of them. So, I call her Ahndrea, her parents caller her Ahn DRE ah, others AN-drea, Ahn-DRAY-ah....

Pick the one you love and go for it!

i like audrey immensely better than aubrey. i think audrey/aubrey olivia flows better. i don't really like audrey grace, but aubrey grace could work. wow. this seems so bipolar for some reason...

I pronounce it jee-AH-nah, but the only place I'd ever seen it before your posts was in a Catherine Coulter novel. In the novel, it was short for Georgianna, so pronunciation was fairly obvious.

I prefer Audrey but like both.

I pronounce it G-ah-nah (G as in George).
Yes, I'd name my child something one could pronounce in different ways. At first, the kid will have to say how the name is pronounced, but then it won't really be a problem, I think.
I like both Aubrey and Audrey and I really can't decide which one I like more =P
I like Olivia better than Grace, though.

I pronounce it Gee-anna, if it were spelt Giana I'd pronounce it Gee-arna.

I hate the name Audrey but I saw a baby called Audrey-Olivia the other day and I thought it sounded nice. But on the basis of what I'd pick I'd go with Aubrey Grace - although Aubrey Olivia is nice.

Gianna is the italian short form of Giovanna, and is pronounced Janna.

I think spelling and the way it suggests correct pronounciation are fundamental.
I prefer Audrey Grace. But Aubrey Olivia is not bad either.

jee-ahna

Sure, unless I had a serious aversion to one or more of the pronounciations. I'm not sure there's a name in the world which is safe from that anyway.

Audrey, more classic and elegant.
Uh neither really, as they're overdone right now, but Audrey Olivia isn't bad.

Gee-anna.
The Gee bit is like how you say the letter G, kinda more like jee I guess.

I prefer Aubrey. Audrey is kind of old-lady-ish to me.
Audrey Olivia and Aubrey Grace.

I think Audrey is little-girl-ish! I prefer Audra because I think it would age better.

I would say jee-AW-nuh, but I would run the first two syllables together so quickly that it would sound more like JON-uh with a very slight e sound between the j sound and the o sound. If that makes sense.

From: [identity profile] waitingonsunday.livejournal.com
Oh, and my vote is for Audrey Grace.

In my Southern American accent, I pronounce Gianna as gee-AHN-a; when I try to pronounce it more Italian-y, it comes out as JAHN-a (or like Johna, I suppose), though I have no idea if that's actually correct or not.

I prefer Audrey to Aubrey. Audrey Grace flows better, but Grace is rather overused, and Audrey Olivia still sounds nice even though it doesn't flow as well.

Audrey Olivia is one of my favorite names in general, so I'm obviously partial to that over Audrey Grace or Aubrey anything.

jee-ahn-na. though I've heard it as jee-ann-na. both are probably correct, depending on your accent.

Audrey is a girls' name while Aubrey is a boys' name, so I guess it would depend on the sex of your child. I prefer Audra to Audrey, though.

I would pronounce the name Gianna as "Jee-AH-nuh".

I like both Audrey and Aubrey. They have beatiful meanings (Audrey means "noble strength" and Aubrey means "friend of the elves"). But since I have never met an Audrey (and I know an Aubrey), I would probably pick Audrey because it is association-free for me. :o)

I think Audrey Olivia and Aubrey Olivia are gorgeous. I think Grace would probably sound nice as a middle name as well, depending on the number of syllables in the last name (in my mind).

Don't worry about naming your child something that commonly has several pronunciations (Andrea, Brianna, etc.). Very rarely will anyone have a name that every person in the world can pronounce/spell perfectly. My first name is Melissa, and people misspell it all the time. I have never understood it. I've never met a Melissa who spells her name differently than I do. So why do people misspell it so often? The point is...no matter how straightforward your child's name is (or your own name, for that matter) there will always be someone who will have a problem pronouncing/spelling it the way you want them to. Seriously. So name your child something that you think is beautiful and meaningful, and then prepare yourself for several years of explaining. :o)
