Lola

So, one of my favorite girls' names is Lola; however, I feel that it lacks the maturity and sophistication that a grown woman would need when in the workforce, etc., so I'd prefer that it be a nickname for something else. I really can't stand Dolores, which it's normally short for, and while I like Lourdes, I don't love it, and I'm definitely seeing pronunciation/spelling problems with it.

So, I thought I'd make a poll and see what y'all think. From what I understand, Lola is derived from the lo in Dolores (which would explain how Lola could be a nickname for Lourdes), so I did a search for all names with lo in them and picked a few.

I could see it working for Elizabeth also.

I don't actually think it needs to be a nickname for anything.
In England we're very very into nicknamey sounding names on their own so it fits right in.

My best friend is called Lorah [gosh yes vile spelling of Laura] and her nickname -started by a younger me infact- is Lola/Lo.

However, I love Eloise and Paloma.

One of my favourite names is Iola [eye-oh-luh] so rather similar.

I never saw how Lola comes from Lourdes, but in a book I read as a child there was a Lola living in Australia and her original name was Lorelei :)

My fiance and I like Lola (or Lula) as a nickname for Tallulah, which isn't on your list. My personal favorite up there is Lousia or Penelope, but I like Poppy as a nn for Penelope better than Lola. :)

I like the names Charlotte and Chloe the best, but think Lola would work better as a nickname for Eloise and Penelope.

I love the name Dolores. It's sad that it means 'sorrow' though.
I also like it (a lot) as a nn for Lourdes, but I agree with you when it comes to the possibilty pronunciation problems.
