Updated my lists here (boys) and here (girls)

I recently started to like the name Jacob, but I really hate the nickname Jake. I've never heard of a Jacob who wasn't a Jake.
If I ever did name a little boy Jacob, I would prefer that he always went by Jacob, but obviously I wouldn't be able to stop other people calling him Jake, even himself if he liked that better. The only possible way I can think of to pre-empt this would be to call him Jack (which I quite like) as a nickname.
Is Jack a weird nickname for Jacob, when it's traditionally a nickname for John?

Also, what do you think of Mimi, specifically as a nickname for Jemima?

An interesting name I heard the other week was Zacharina for a girl. WDYT? Is it a real name? I'm not sure I like it, and it reminds me of that instrument, an ocarina.

Even if you called him Jack as a nickname, people would still call him Jake. Like you said, you can't prevent other people from using nicknames, so you either have to put up with the nickname possibilities, or choose a different name. There are a few boys names I won't use, because I hate the nicknames.

I've never heard of Jack as a nn for Jacob.. but I think it could work. I know a Jacob that doesn't go by any nickname- just Jacob. But I'd also take into consideration that even if you nn him Jack and he doesn't like that or Jacob.. he still may want to end up going by Jake anyway.

I like Mimi.. but I don't like Jemima that much. I know a Jemima and she goes by "Jem" .. I don't really like that much either.

I don't like Zacharina. This comes up from google: http://www.babynamer.com/zacharina
But it still sounds made up to me... like "I really wanted a boy named Zach.. so since I had a girl, I'll name her Zacharina." I also think of an ocarina and Zelda(ocarina of time).

When I was little and I first heard the name in a Beatrix Potter story, I honestly thought Jemima must've been the ugliest name I've ever heard. Somehow I'm beginning to like it now. Mimi has a completely different sound to it, so I guess it'd be a nice contrast and when she gets older she can pick which she'd like more for introducing herself. Overall I like it.

I ALSO really hate Jake! Jack sounds like it'd be fine to me.

Zacharina...ew.

I dated a Jacob and he always went by Jacob. He never used a nickname or anything. Of course, now he spells it Jakob because he thinks it makes him cooler or something...I dunno. I don't think it would be weird to call him Jack if you're trying to head off nicknames you don't like. They're not exact matches, but similar enough that it's not weird. Mimi is what I call my grandmother, so I find that a weird nickname for someone who isn't old. I'm not a huge fan of Zacharina. I'm not a huge fan of the name Zachary, though, because it's the name of my sister's stupid ex boyfriend. I bet that's my main influence, but I'm still not a fan.

I have a nephew Jacob who is never called Jake. I think kids are only given nicknames like that if the parents use the nickname.

But my nephew is only 4 so I guess there's still time for people to call him Jake.

If you TELL people not to call him Jake, then he won't be called Jake. My cousin David has NEVER been called Dave, and do you know why? Because Aunt Kay TOLD people she didn't want him called Jake.

That being said...Jack makes a little more sense as a nn for Jacob than it does for John. I HATE it as a nn for John, because one has nothing to do with the other. Except for the fact that people are stupid.

I like Mimi as a nn for Miriam. But, I also don't really like Jemima. It makes me think of syrup.

I know a little boy called Jacob. He's 10 and so far he has always gone by Jacob. He is never Jake. That being said I understand why you would want an alternative nickname and I think Jack is fine. I don't think it is a huge stretch.
