*Name idea*

I talked about it with my husband...and we love the name--for a girl--

Manessa

Pronouned--
Man-ssa

It was my mothers middle name, I had never heard of it before her. And I really want to carry on something from my mother!

What'da think?

*Me*

How are you pronouncing it exactly? I think my British accent puts a different twist on it ;)

[identity profile] dingo83.livejournal.com 2005-10-30 07:45 am (UTC)(link)
OK, now that's different. Almost like Vanessa but with an M. That's better than the typo.

Ahh, that makes more sense. :) Thanks. My comment below.

That was my question, pronunciation. Either way, combining the words "man" and "ass," then adding an "a" to make it look like a feminine name...I would never do it. Maybe as a middle name of she really wants to carry on the name from her mother, but never as a first name for me.

I find that a lot of names actually sound very different with my accent. For instance, I'd never think of ass, because it's arse for us and sounds nothing like what's in the name, haha. Wacky accent antics!

I don't know why, but it reminds me of the word menace. However. If it means a lot to you, you should use it. It does have a nice sound; I dislike the name Vanessa because of my general aversion of the letter V, and this takes that problem away, leaving a name that really does have quite a cadence to it. And again, a family name is always a good name in my opinion.

manessa?

i mean....it might mean a lot to you but its definitely man-essa.
your kid will be teased to no end.

How do you get Man-ssa from Manessa? Why put the E in there if you are going to ignore it? That just seems like it would cause a lot of confusion. Other then that, I guess it's not so bad, I don't care for Manssa if that's how you say it. Manessa is nice, though.

[identity profile] morphinae.livejournal.com 2005-10-30 09:44 am (UTC)(link)
woops, didn't mean to reply to you :P I need to wake up!

People are going to pronounce it Man-essa. If you want it pronounced Man-sa, then I'd spell it that way, otherwise you are setting your child up to be correcting every person she comes across.

lol i know im Jena ( out of my own choosing) and im constantly spelling it out... or ppl call Me geena...**Sigh**

[identity profile] ewaeva.livejournal.com 2005-10-30 11:01 am (UTC)(link)
It starts with "man."

'Nuff said.

[identity profile] pale-september.livejournal.com 2005-10-30 11:26 am (UTC)(link)
My name is Amanda, and my family calls me "Mandy". I like it. :)

[identity profile] ewaeva.livejournal.com 2005-10-30 12:42 pm (UTC)(link)
Somehow, Mandy's... different (I'm not just saying that to not offend you, I actually think it's cute). The "man" part doesn't seem so obvious. But it's the first thing I thought of when I saw "Manessa." I can't really explain it.

Like the poster below said, the natural nickname for "Manessa" seems to be "Manny." Ick.

[identity profile] pale-september.livejournal.com 2005-10-30 12:53 pm (UTC)(link)
I know about the "man" jokes. lol "A-man-duuuh" :)

[identity profile] pale-september.livejournal.com 2005-10-30 11:25 am (UTC)(link)
Hm, I'm kind of 50/50 on it. I'd be afraid she would get the nickname "Manny". It would be a great middle name though.

[identity profile] our-journey.livejournal.com 2005-10-30 12:11 pm (UTC)(link)
I agree with that. I think it's very unique, and pretty (to me, and obviously you), but she could still get the "man" jokes in there. :/

[identity profile] dionysia.livejournal.com 2005-10-30 01:35 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't like it as a first name. Middle name would be preferable.

[identity profile] elemmennope.livejournal.com 2005-10-30 04:52 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't mind it, but I bet it would get annoying to say "No, Manessa with an M, not Vanessa" 35,000 times throughout her life. :P

[identity profile] sherball.livejournal.com 2005-10-30 04:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Do you know where the name comes from?

I think names with meaning make the person with the name proud to have the name. Even if it's a little out of the ordinary. :)

[identity profile] quiet-recluse.livejournal.com 2005-10-30 06:30 pm (UTC)(link)
Sounds fine, why not?

[identity profile] florassecret.livejournal.com 2005-10-30 10:29 pm (UTC)(link)
I kind of like it! It's different not many people will have. I named my second baby after her late grandmother and great grandmother.

[identity profile] xbutterflyharmx.livejournal.com 2005-10-31 12:43 pm (UTC)(link)
How about Anessa? I think that's so pretty and is close to manessa but gets rid of the "man" part. Her nickname would probably be Anne or Nessa. Just a suggestion. =) I like the name a lot either way.

[identity profile] ewaeva.livejournal.com 2005-10-31 01:46 pm (UTC)(link)
That is kind of cute...
but... instead of "man," I can see her getting the "anus" jokes :/
Just trying to think like a 10-year old, this isn't REALLY me ;) !!!
You just can't win...
