Apparently adding a Y to a boy's name DOES make a girl's name. I met a woman (probably 40 year old) whose given name was Brandy. She insisted on being called Brandon. (Pronounced Bran- DAWN). Later I saw that she spells it Brandyn. ???

Also:  In the last week I've met two two women with honest to god men's names - Michael and Clyde. The former was 30ish, the latter 60ish.

I HATE boys' names on girls. Hate hate hate. Then people are suddenly like, "It's too feminine for a boy!"

I'm sorry, but just because the writers of Scrubs decided to name one of the female characters Elliot doesn't change the fact that it's a BOY'S NAME.

I like some boy's names on girls, actually.
But Michael & Clyde? No. I was gonna say that maybe Michael is short for Michaela...but that is pronounced differently.
Also, I pronounce names with 'y's in them differently as well. Brandyn, to me, is Bran-din.

Not that this is anything new, but I simply can't help but comment on posts like these :D Being a girl named Steve, I can testify that the only thing that makes something a 'girls name' or a 'boys name' is familiarity. Steve sounds like the most masculine name in the world, but I firmly believe that this is because people only know of boys named Steve. To me, it's just Eve with a soft S sound at the start. And all of my friends now think of Steve as a Unisex name or even a girls name. I'm the only Steve my boyfriend knows, and when he recently heard that his brother had moved in with a Steve his first question was 'Brad has a girlfriend?'

I always thought the Brooke sounded like a boys name and Timothy sounded feminine, but it's what we get used to really. After years of living with an unusual name my conclusion is that a name is just a sound you like.

I always noticed Michael has a listing in the girls' names section of all of my name books. When I first moved into my newish apartment, my roommate and I ran into a neighbor who introduced herself as Michael. She was pretty, but slightly boyish, and after she had walked away, my roommate whispered, "Did she say Michael? Was that a transvestite?" I explained about my name books (he knows what a dork I am, so it was okay), but every time I talked with her after that, I found myself still trying to determine if she was a girl named Michael or a boy named Michael turned girl.

I think Clyde is an awful name anyway, but especially on a girl.

I once worked for a doctors office as a scheduler and one of my primary jobs was to call the patients to remind them of their upcoming appointments. We had no information on our sheets other than name, SS#, and phone number and with so many patients couldn't be bothered to type each persons information into the computer just to find out their sex.

It made for some general confusion when I would call expecting to speak to a male and had one speak ready to go to explain HIS procedure, only to discover the owner of the name was female and had to switch gears to explain the female preparation.

I don't mind names like Taylor for a girl but Clyde is definitely a bit much.

I agree with this. I always hated the name Jordan, until I met several girls named Jordan, and now I tend to think of it more as a girl's name (and like it better as a girl's name!!) I don't like the name Shawn on a boy, but like it on a girl. I also very much like Ryan on a girl. I'm not pretending I didn't notice when I met girls named Shawn and Ryan that they had "boy's" names, but you get over that pretty fast once you know the person. I do agree with what someone posted above, though, that naming a girl Shawn, Ryan, Kyle, etc., is considered cute, but naming a boy Mary-Ann is not nearly as well received :).

& I like some boy's names on girls, too, especially Elliot & Carson. I don't believe I ever loved a girl's name on a boy, but yeah, why not?

No. I was one her ID. She had a very feminine middle name, but I don't remember what it was.
