[identity profile] 0o-faerie.livejournal.com posting in [community profile] babynames
I got two questions, both related to nicknames/short names.
I personally like short names (one or two syllables), but it appears that in English, a lot of short names, especially on girls, are nicknames. So...
1. Can you guys come up with more one syllabic girl's names? I could only come up with Jane, June, Joan, Lane, Maeve, May, Rae, Lee, Faye & Anne.
2. Is giving nicknames a particularly English-speaking-country thing? Or does it happen in other countries/cultures as well? Because here it's quite uncommon. Possibly because a lot of Dutch names are just very short. It's interesting =)

Blair, Bryn, Jade, and Lynn spring to mind immediately. Probably more will follow shortly.

I took Russian in college, and specialized in Russian history. Russians are OBSESSED with nicknames! Russians rarely, if ever, go by their given name. Russians usually have a different nickname for every stage of their life, so they usually have up to 10 nicknames, depending who they are talking to. I love russian names!

Hmm, I've always pronounced Meryl with 2 syllables.

In Israel they give nicknames a lot. One of the most bizarre (and surprisingly common) ones is Dudu as a nickname for David.

I hear it pronounced both Mer-ll and Merl.

I'm too lazy to go through and see what others have posted, so...

Faith, Jean, Kate (I know it's a nickname, but I like it as a stand-alone name),Brea(prn Bree), Reese, Fern, Jo

Yeah, that's all I can think of right now.
