I'm trying to find a name for the male protagonist in my book. He has the name of his father, grandfather and great grandfather, and the name will continue on to his son (or daughter in a roundabout way).

As such, I'd like a long name that has many nickname possibilities.

In my draft he is known as John Blank Addison --- Addison was given to him long before any television show made it popular, and so it will remain. I'm thinking John is a little bland for this character. He is dark haired, tanned and of polite, gentle nature (if that helps)

Which of the following do you prefer? And please suggest other names I could use and some middle names!
Benjamin Addison
William Addison
Lawrence Addison
John Addison
Alexander Addison
Nathaniel Addison

I like William, Lawrence, or John. Nathaniel and Alexander are okay, but for some reason, I picture both as being "newer" common names. Names like William, Lawrence, John, etc. are the ones that were more commonly used back when the first one of them was named, you know?

I also like:
James
Peter
Daniel
Thomas
etc.

I'd go back to the year you picture his great-grandfather being born and look at the top 50 names. That'd give you a good picture of what was "common" then, and you can go by that to decide if you want something that was common at the time, or something that was a little different. I'd definitely stick with the more classical names like the ones you have listed, though.
