[identity profile] bree019.livejournal.com posting in [community profile] babynames
As a community focused on names, we often talk about or refer to names that are trendy in the real world. Often, people complain that trendy names lose their appeal once they've become trendy.

I've noticed names becoming trendy here at baby names, too. Names that are not necessarily u-neek, but as the dictionary definition states, of, in, or pertaining to the latest trend or style. Which, in this community, seems to be leaning much more toward "different/old-fashioned".

What are some names you've found to be increasingly popular and thus, trendy in this community?

Recently, I've noticed almost everyone has either Oliver or Eleanor on their list somewhere. Before Oliver and Eleanor, it was Asher, Elliott and Audrey. I also see Henry, Harper and Eloise entering more and more people's lists.

ruby, violet and isla. unfortunately, i am guilty as well. ruby has been on my list for ages, but violet and isla are new additions.

i agree with your noticing oliver, henry and harper. again, oliver has been on my list for years and years, but i have just started considering henry.

i feel your pain about the irking, definitely! hannah was my #1 girls name for years, ever since i was a little girl, and now i just cant see myself using it. ever. its just way too common now.

ruby is a family name for me, was my great aunts name, and was a nickname my grandmother gave me when i was very young (thanks to my red hair) so i would still love to use it, i hope it doesnt get much more popular.

i remember hearing oliver on a little boy when i was working retail in like 1998 or something, and he was the cutest, most energetic, just generally awesome kid, and i fell in love with the name right then.

i just started liking violet more and more, thanks to 'private practice', the more i hear it, the more i like it. its not a name that ever would have crossed my mind before. its inching its way to the top of my list.

henry is really great, and i adore the nickname huck, but i know a guy named henry and he is strange... he is kind of a friend/acquaintance i have known a long time, so it would be wierd to actually use it.

Henry has been on my list for as long as I can remember, and its popularity bothers me too.

i do think some [especially girls] are limited to us babyname freaks though.
I don't see Isla making it big anytime soon.. its more like we catch onto eachothers names.

I swear these 'community trendys' being talked about are all my favourites!

I agree with you on Harper (which I love too, actually), Eleanor, Henry and Asher.
And I agree with [livejournal.com profile] arbus on Violet.
As for the rest...Anneliese (or Annaliese) and Finley seem to be quite popular as well.

i have loved the name finn ever since i saw the film 'how to make an american quilt' (maybe 95 or something?) where winona ryders character plays a girl named finn. i always thought i would use it as a girls name, but it has since migrated to my boys list. i absoutely love it.

I've definitely been noticing Harper showing up more and more here lately. Have yet to see it used in the real world outside of Ms. Lee.

And remember that her first name was Nelle, not Harper. Nelle Harper Lee. Makes it sound to me like it was honoring a last name...which is sounds like ANYWAY.

I was actually about to add to my comment that I wonder how many people would be willing to name their child Nelle after her, but I thought that would sound snotty, plus I'm guessing they technically wouldn't use the name BECAUSE of her.

Maybe Ellen, her grandmother's name, whom she was named to honor.

I like Nelle. What's wrong with it?

I have no problem with it, personally, but it doesn't seem to be in keeping with most of the posters here.

Her mother's maiden name was Finch. It's been a few years since I read her bio, but I believe Harper was her grandmother Ellen's maiden name. Might have been her paternal grandmother's, though.

i've had elinor, henry, and harper on my list as long as i can remember. i'm not planning on having kids any time soon, but even if they are popular when i have kids, i'd still use them. as long as they are britney-ashley-jessica popular. i'd hate for my kid to be harper t.

Harper, Sebastien, Atticus, Soleil. Those are the ones I thought of immediately.

I've always loved Oliver (probably because I have known an Oliver my entire life) and Henry.

Eleanor, Isla and Violet are the names that I can really think of.

Isabella (I plead super-guilty on this one! :P), variations of.
And I'm spotting more and more people warming up on Madison :P

I definitely agree with "old people" names. Olivia, Oliver, Olive, Eleanor, Henry, etc.

Though I am guilty of loving Olivia. And frankly, I don't care much about the popularity of a name. Being a Jessica in the 80s didn't kill me and being an Olivia in hte 2000s won't kill my future, non-existent child.

Imogen, Ezra, Silas, Scarlett and Jane (mn) seem to be picking up speed on this site. Isabelle (and its many spellings), Jade, Juliet seem to be soildly popular at good old babynames.

I've always loved Oliver. It was in a movie I watched when I was about ten. However, since it seems like everyone and their mom likes the name Oliver, I've found my interested in it waning.

Harper...I am very guilty of not considering it as a name until someone posted it a while ago. It's become my name du jour, and while I would like to name a child Harper now, I probably won't when I do have a child.

Most of them have already been said. I'm not really fond of most of the popular names in this community, except for Atticus, which shows up a fair bit.
