In response to the post asking about what turns you off of a name, I said that I don't like names that are too strongly associated with a book/tv show/movie.

So, I'm just wondering...what are some names that, for you, you have a strong association with a bookd/tv show/movie. Ones that no matter how hard you try, even if it is a good name on it's on, you can't stop associating it with that book/tv show/movie.

For me, it's names like Hermione, Vernon, Petunia, etc. Most of the ones from the Potter series except, oddly enough, James and Lily.

Also...Alexander (Xander), Willow, Cordelia, Buffy (though...hopefully nobody would ever actually use that...). The rest of the names on that show, I can seperate from the series.

EDIT: I almost forgot one. Almost any other name on the show, I could seperate out, but...I don't think I'll ever be able to seperate the name Sawyer from Lost.

same here. :D the name Ross is also very strongly associated with Friends for me. not so much Joey, Rachel & Monica (i actually know a sibset with these names).

Ugh, me too. I never liked these names before, and although I love the show and those characters, I could never name anything (child OR pet) Chandler or Phoebe.

And I agree w/ the HP thing too. Most of those names are off-limits except perhaps one or two (offhand I'm thinking James, Molly, Hannah, etc.)

I like Pheobe but I wouldn't use it because of friends.

Addison is a huge one for me. I can't hear it without thinking of Grey's Anatomy.

I don't have any trouble with Alexander, but I have the same problem with Xander; I agree on the rest of the Buffy names.

James, Lily, Harry, Seamus, and Ginny don't automatically make me think of Harry Potter, but the more uncommon ones like Hermione, Petunia, Severus, Albus, Sirius, etc. all do.

Atticus, but that one doesn't bother me. In fact, I'm using it as a middle name BECAUSE of the book reference (and also because I love the name).

So many use Atticus because of the book reference. I think.. 'read something other than compulsory high school reading!'

It just seems to be everyones favourite book.

Just because it's everyone's favorite doesn't mean that it's not a good book. I happen to be an English major and I'm going to be a Librarian and I still consider it to be one of my favorite books.

Addison.
Addison.
Addison.
And also, Addison.

Oh, and Paige.

I'll throw Madison in there, too.

I was at the hospital for my ultrasound and had lunch while waiting for the bus, and there was a man and a woman sitting at my table, and the woman was on the phone and she said, "She had a girl, named her Paige Madison [last name]."
I lol'd.

Haha. Or was it Maddysynn?

Dawson, Joey (for a girl)
Phoebe from friends
Addison, Meredith, etc from Grey's... and include any "Grey/Gray/Graydon/Grayson" names in there too

You REALLY need to check out the babynamevoyager (http://babynamewizard.com/namevoyager/) to see how popular culture influences name choice.

Honestly.
Look up 'Xander' and 'Willow' - the names were practically nonexistent before 2000. 'Buffy' on the other hand, hit its high in the 1980s (which fits the timeline of the series itself)

Then try it with other popular fictional names - or names of actresses, for example. LOTS of fun.

I thought of Hermione first. Harry even, now.

Pauline (Heavenly Creatures), even Juliet from the same film. Depends on the day, lol.

Marianne is a strong connotation with Sense and Sensibility. Rose and Jack are Titanic. That's just some.

But - that isn't necessarily a bad thing for me. Pauline, Juliete, Marianne and Rose are all on my list!

(Buffy used to be a well-used name.)

I think of the show Family Affair from the 60s, even before Buffy the Vampire Slayer. I am a child of TVLand, lol.

I LOVE HEAVENLY CREATURES!

My dislike of the name Pauline stems from a very annoying relative though, and not the movie. :)

I first saw that movie when I was 9 or 10 - it wasn't until recently that someone brought it up, and I had to buy the DVD!

All Harry Potter names, apart from Harry itself (strange, I know), Isobel (Izzy), Addison (Grey's Anatomy), Temperance (Bones), and of course, as someone mentioned above, Rory & Lorelai (Gilmore Girls). Also, Chandler (Friends).

James and Lily are popular enough to have other assosciations.. I doubt Hermione is known to you via other ports.

My baby cousin was recently named Harry James.. Harry Potter's name, I find that odd.
I also know a Sawyer born around the first series of Lost.

"I don't think I'll ever be able to seperate the name Sawyer from Lost."

I agree.

Also, Monica, Chandler and Ross. All the other friends character names are fine, but those names ALWAYS make me think of the show first.

Sky and Boyd as in from Neighbours (but I suppose not many people will know what I'm on about).

I know Neighbours. :)

I'd have to add Assumpta (Ballykissangel) though I've always thought it a pretty name, and given my obsession with House I'd probably have to stay away from those names as well ... though I have a certain love for the name Al[l]ison and names w/ Lisa in them (like Alisa or Annalisa etc.)

I agree with all the Buffy characters. I think Buffy would be a cute name, theoretically, but it probably wouldn't ever work out. Giles, I think, is one exception to these names.

Also, Lorelai (as it's spelt on the show) and Rory.
