at work I came across the name Galen on a file. no indication of whether this is a male or a female, anyone know? I'm trying to decide if I like it or not...

also, in a parenting magazine I saw a photo of triplets, the two girls were Faith and Hope, and the boy was... Gabriel. really, why not just call him Love? or Charity? [/sarcasm]

I had a friend named this in elementary school. It's pronounced Gale-en. I like it:)

Oh, sorry! Boy, haha. It's definitely a boy's name. I can't see it on a girl at all. I think it's one of those names, though, like Elliot or Finley, that people all of a sudden think sounds good on a girl, even though it's really masculine.

I've heard it for both sexes.
Because they don't want him teased mercilessly?

I've only heard of Gaelen, and I like that spelling better. I'm not a real fan of the name though. I don't know why.

*since everyone else here says it's a boy's name, the Gaelen I heard of is female, and I think I like it better on girls =)

Galen is for a boy...I know a Calen (boy) and Kaylan (girl), both pronouced Kay-Lynn. There is also a boy on KidNation named Guylan, that's kind of weird. I don't think I would use any form of those on anyone.

Galen is very masculine I think. There's a character named Galen in Battlestar Galactica. I kinda like it, but I'd be worried about kids going "hur hur, your name starts with GAY" all the time.

My friend said the same thing, haha. It's like her cousins - Jeff, June, Jenny - and Stephanie. :)

Galen (I pronounce it as GAY-lin) is a boy's name. There was a Greco-Roman physician in the second century BCE who contributed a lot to medicine by that name, so that's who I always think of. I really like the name, but I feel like giving a boy that starts with the sound "gay" would be a really, really bad idea.

Galen was a Roman physician whose findings pretty much dominated the world of medical science up until...well, today. He performed brain and eye surgery, to name a few of his remarkable legacies.

My (impolite word) cousins named their daughter Gailynn, after her father's middle name, Galen. Her grandmother insists on prn'ing it Gail-lynn, but it's supposed to be gail-in. They gave her the mn Dawn, which is her mom and her sister's mn as well. It's really creepy. (needless to say, ick.)

Eurgh, I hate sibsets that are sets of things, like Faith and Hope or Ruby and Pearl or June and April... I could go on.

I have a friend from college named Gaelen. She's a girl. I can only imagine it on a girl as a result of that...

The problem with Galen is the GAY sound. Kids are cruel.

Faith and Hope are theological virtues, are they not? And Gabriel is an angel. So, it actually matches. Because, really, Charlity and Love don't work on a boy. The only one that might is one of the other additional virtues, Justice.

Still, Gabriel fits into the religious connection.
