Okay, this is a question I've had for awhile...

What do you think of people who name their kid Jesus? I think it is extraordinarily sacriligious and...I dunno...disrespectful? I, personally, find it offensive. I'm sorry, but your child is NOT God, nor is he the son of God.

Jesus was a very popular name before THE Jesus was born. Jesus is merely another name, I don't find it disrespectful at all... It's not used in many english speaking societies, but in Mexico and the likes it's still widely popular.

It's more of a cultural thing, I think -- a fairly common name in hispanic circles (and pronounced hey-soos, not gee-zus). Doesn't bother me one whit.

I don't think they're saying their child is God or the son of God. I'd like to name my next daughter after my grandmother, but that doesn't mean I think she's my grandmother, it means I think highly of my grandmother.

It's common to name a girl Mary to honor the virgin mother in Catholic families. I don't think either is sacriligious. My only problem is that it gives the kid a lot to live up to.

it depends what ur background is, i guess. if you're american, it might be a tad weird, but in latin american countries its really common and its not offensive, its an honor. my cousin is named Jesus Maria...she's a girl. what about kids named Muhammid and other religions. Also, Emmanuel/mannuel are also names for Jesus, but people don't complain about those. i do think its very religious to name your child jesus, but i'm not religious so i don't care.

I agree with what has been said already. Jesus was a name before and after Jesus Christ. I think that if a person is naming his/her son after Jesus Christ, they are showing a lot of love for Jesus. I don't see it as offensive or sacriligeous (spelling, sorry) in any way.

There are people throughout the world called Mohammed, Jesus, Mary and so forth. I feel it is definitely an act of honour and praise, not disrespect.

It bugs me too. I don't care for it, because of the extreme religious connotation, but that's the same for Mohammed, Mary, Moses, Buddha, etc. for me.

I don't think it's meant to be disrespectful. Actually, I think it's meant to be the highest respect for the family's religion and such.

I'm not religious at all, but I don't think I would do it either way.

I believe it is actually pronounced differently.
Like Jose is said as in "No way Jose!" (Hoe-zay)
So maybe Jesus is said "Hoe-ses" or something

um, first off not everyone thinks that jesus is god or the son of god so they wouldn't be naming their child after anyone. secondly, the name jesus (issa in arabic) was around before the prophet/'son of god' was anyway...he's not the only one with that name that ever existed- like someone pointed out, it was extremely popular before 'the jesus' was born'.

I think it's really strange. Also because a lot of people -strangely enough- use the name as a curse word. Imagine every time someone curses, someone looks up: 'Yes?' =\ That's crazy.
Also, maybe the kid grows up to be an atheist. Then it's very strange to have such an extremely Biblical name (much stranger than, for example, Adam).
I believe it's not uncommon in Spanish-speaking countries though. And after all, hey-soos (as someone pointed out above) sounds nothing like Jesus to me, or the way we say it here.

I always feel really sorry for people who are named Christian, Jesus, etc., and then they turn out to believe and follow a different religion.

I'm a Christian and agree with a number of things that have already been said, such as:

*It's the highest form of respect to represent the familys religion (thought it would suck if he/she turned up Pagan or Atheist when the kiddo becomes old enough to think for it's self)

*The name's been around for longer than Jesus has been.

i understand the whole Jesus was around before and everything, but I personally don't like it. I don't exactly think its super sacreligious, I just don't think it's something I would want to name my kid. Not to put them in the same category, but I wouldn't name my kid Marilyn Monroe or Oprah either.

I wanted to say something along these lines. Everyone's been saying that the name was common before "the" Jesus, but there's an undeniable connection to that particular bearer of the name. There were probably millions of Adolfs before Hitler (not to compare Jesus to Hitler in any way. lol.) but who is the first person you think of when you hear the name?

It's not like anybody gives a child one of these names and says, "Who? Oh, wow. I don't think I've ever heard of them..."

Chill! They're not personally attacking you by honoring their religion. There are a lot of people named Jesus. There are a lot of people named Muhammed, same thing. When the parents name their kid, they don't think their son is the second coming, they just pick a name they like that means something to them. The idea that that's sacriligious is a little scary to me.

I know a boy who was going to be named Jesus if he had been born on Christmas Day...he was born a little early and got Elvis instead.


I can see why someone may be offended that someone were to name their child Jesus.

However I find it hard to believe that many people [at least in the Western world] would name their child Jesus if they were not religiously inclined. So it depends on the individual I suppose.


I'm not at all religiously inclined, but I feel like the child might suffer for a name like that.

It is a little different to Mary, which is a far more common name.

It depends on the culture, really. In English countries, it is less accepted, but very common in Spanish speaking countries. And as others have said, the name Jesus isn't exclusive to the Son of God. Even in the days of Jesus, there were others with the name, according to historians.
