Oct. 25th, 2007 06:22 pmI've been playing around with names a lot, lately. Just...thinking of some that I like, and may or may not end up using in the future. The ones I've been coming up with are ones that are very uncommon, because...I have this thing where I don't want my kids to have names that everyone else on the face of the earth has, if I can help it. So...that being said...what do you think of the following:
Girls
Lynnea
Shyla
Shayla
Dreama
Mattea
Paisley
Boys
Brenner
Kellan
Daylon
Kayne
Also, just a general question...I've noticed that a lot of people have a hatred of "y"s, and I was just wondering why? In some cases I agree that, yes, they look bad and tacky. For example, I'd never name my child Jennyfer or Chrystopher. But in some cases I think the "y" spelling is a more pleasing look (Dylan as opposed to Dillon, or Corynne as opposed to Corrine) or is equally as nice as any alternative spelling (Jordan/Jordyn, Ashley/Ashleigh, Tracy/Tracie, etc.)

Date: 2007-10-26 01:52 am (UTC)How is Corynne any different than Jennyfer or Chrystopher?
Of your girls' names, Shyla, Shayla and Paisley sound like strippers to me. Dreama sounds like a hooker. Mattea is acceptable.
Of your boys' names, Brenner is a last name, Kellen is a pro football player, and Daylon and Kayne sound like bits and pieces of other, better names taken apart and smashed together.

Date: 2007-10-26 01:58 am (UTC)With something like Dylan or Ashley, the Y is supposed to be there. For Jennyfer or Chrystopher, it's not. I suppose it's all a matter of "original" spelling.

Date: 2007-10-26 02:01 am (UTC)I seriously didn't know that Kellan was a football player. What team? The Kayne...it's actually almost like a guilty pleasure for me. I absolutely loved Kayne Gillaspie on Project Runway.
I have a hard time picturing Dreama as a hooker, but that's probably because the girl I knew with that name...was about 2 or 3 the last time I saw her.

Date: 2007-10-26 02:06 am (UTC)Plus, I'm about as fashion challenged as they come and...the first time I heard Paisley as a name, it was before I realised it was also a fabric pattern. Sad, but true.

Date: 2007-10-26 02:14 am (UTC)I don't like Dreama - it sounds like "Dreamer" with a Brooklyn accent. I like Mattea a lot, though.

Date: 2007-10-26 02:15 am (UTC)...I actually think it's a cool-sounding name. I just wouldn't use it because, while I'm cool with a lot of "noun" names, jeans fabric isn't something I really would want to name a person after.

Date: 2007-10-26 02:25 am (UTC)Shayla seems a tad trailer trash but it is better than Shyla.
Dreama sounds fake.
Mattea is not my style but I like it, and the nickname Mattie.
Paisley is super cute.
I like Brenner and Kellan.
Daylon looks like Dylan with an extra letter.
Kayne looks like Kanye West's name scrambled.

Date: 2007-10-26 02:37 am (UTC)Plus, like I said in another comment...I adored Kayne on the last season of Project Runway, so I'm a little partial to that spelling.

Date: 2007-10-26 02:39 am (UTC)I like Mattea because of the nn.
See, to me...Kanye looks like a misspelled version of Kayne...

ie - Madylyn or something else ridiculous

Date: 2007-10-26 03:08 am (UTC)While you don't like the way a 'y' sticks out in a name, I often don't like the flat look that an i makes. Such as Dylan vs. Dillon. I don't ALWAYS prefer the 'y', but in some cases I do.
Why Lynnea? Linnea is already an uncommon name unless you don't live in the US.
Do you mean the name in general, or the spelling of it? I like the name because I heard it and liked the sound of it. I prefer the Lynnea spelling because if I were going to take the -ea off the end, I would spell the name Lynn as opposed to Linn. So, personally, I prefer to keep the Lynn spelling for Lynnea.
As for the rest of the names, we're probably not going to agree, so there's probably no point in me trying to defend my choices of names. And to be totally honest, for most of them there's no specific reason that I like them, they're just names I like the sound of.
You said you don't like -er names...is it just the -er spelling, or the sound. Example, would you prefer Skylar to Skyler?

Date: 2007-10-26 03:28 am (UTC)I, personally, take sound into consideration more than spelling. I figure that your name is said, more often than it is written. If I don't like how it sounds, then it's out...regardless of the spelling. While I wouldn't go for something that is spelled all kreateivleigh...I don't take spelling into consideration quite as much. Though, yes, if I like the sound of a name, I will then go with a spelling that I like the look of, more. It's just not the first thing I look at.
Gah. I guess I picked the wrong example for the -er/-ar, with the whole 'y' thing.
On a semi-related note....I prefer to go by Mandi as opposed to Mandy.

Date: 2007-10-26 03:37 am (UTC)Lynnea - It's ok.
Shyla - Sounds fake. Reminds me of Shia Labeouf.
Shayla - It's ok.
Dreama - No, no, no. Sounds made up and gross and like a British person saying "dreamer". It's also one of the names of one of the lunch ladies at my high school.
Mattea - Eh.
Paisley - Nooo.
Boys
Brenner - No.
Kellan - It's... ok.
Daylon - Dylan is perfectly acceptable and nice, Daylon looks messed up.
Kayne - Reminds me of Cane and Abel.

Date: 2007-10-26 03:38 am (UTC)I know Kanye's not even a legit name, but anytime I see Kayne I get that line from Diamonds from Sierra Leone in my head ("It's Kanye but some of my plastics still say Kayne").
I like Paisley and Shayla.
